The Nyero rock paintings are located in eastern Uganda in Kumi District, 8 km west of Kumi town, about 250 km from the capital city Kampala. The Nyero rock paintings are among the most important rock art in Uganda. Generally positioned away from flat land.

Nyero rock paintings are situated in Nyero village in the western part of Uganda, this village contains Uganda’s oldest rock paintings and is the best place to stop over while visiting Kidepo valley national park in the karamoja sub region. The Nyero rock paintings were first documented in the year 1913.

The Batwa people believed to have done the paintings renowned as Hunter gatherers of pygmy origin migrated from the area when the current inhabitants settled; they now live in the Rwanda and Congo areas. The rock places are believed to have been sacred places to the gods
Nyero rock paintings have got different local stories that will be narrated to you by your tour guide concerning the caves, the drawings on the Nyero rocks are similar to those found in Karamoja, Ngora, Pallisa, Dowle Island found in Lake Victoria and Kabermaido.
The rock paintings represent figures of animals, canoes and circles, this paintings have been described by researchers to be geometric in nature, the type of rock art in the Nyero rock paintings is believed to be part of the homogeneous tradition depicted in red pigment.
The Nyero rock site has got six shelters with each containing its own unique drawings, though the mysterious painters are not clearly known the iteso people used to pay tributes to the gods in the until in the 1970s some of the traces of smoke is still evident, people used to visit the rock to solve problems of no rain, child bearing and many more.
The Nyero 1, has got six sets of concentric circles with paintings shaped in acacia pods. Nyero 2, the paintings here are done in shades of red with more forty different drawings there’s also a small cavity known as pocket believed to have been a place where inhabitants use to put their offerings for the gods. Nyero 3, the paintings here are in concentric white circles and the outer circles surrounded by double curved designs with double lines in between divided into smaller compartments.
Nyero 4, this contains trees of small red concentric circles, colonial shapes and lines. Nyero 5, this has got a red geometric motif with a combination of linear and circular shapes made of brush and finger but part of the paintings here have been affected by running water erosion. Nyero 6, this one offers spectacular views as it’s situated on top of the hill it contains two finger painted small oval shapes and a slanting L shape
Nyero rock paintings can be accessed west of Kumi town on Ngora road the rock paintings are 8 kilometers from the town. Kumi is about 250 kilometers from Kampala. At arrival tourists will pay affordable entry fee and will be provided with a guide who will take you through with the history of place.
Tourists visit the Nyero paintings can get accommodation from Kumi town or Soroti town.
The Nyero rock paintings can be visited all year round. The rocks can be abit slippery during the wet season so coming with good hiking boots is advised.
