Description
This tour is provided by Monterrasol Travel, a company that specializes in year-round multi-day private car tours for small groups across Central and Southern Europe, especially Greece and the Balkans.
We invite you to come with us to explore Bosnia-Herzegovina with our year-round 11 days discovery tour over Bosnia-Herzegovina from Sarajevo. Come to explore this medieval land and see medieval fortresses, old towns and Orthodox monasteries. Take this tour as a good example of off-beaten-path travel, a conscious way to travel where you are more mindful of your journey and gain a deeper awareness of the country.
At the beginning of this tour, we are going to see Sarajevo Tunnel (called Tunnel of Hope), an important reminder of Sarajevo siege. Before arriving in Banja Luka, the main city of Republica Srbska, we will visit a controversial place called the Bosnian Pyramids and fortresses Vranduk, Maglaj, Srebrenik, Gradacac, Doboj and Tesanj as important memories of the medieval history of Bosnia.
From Banja Luka to Mostar, we will come to see ethnic-village Ljubacke doline with cute rural houses carefully stored here, visit town Jajce to see its waterfall, fortress, and famous small old wooden watermills, and visit monastery Scit and its ethnographic museum located on a thin peninsula in the middle of a beautiful lake.
In Mostar (UNESCO World Heritage site), we are going to walk its historical center, learn about the history of this beautiful town, and, of course, stay on the famous Mostar Bridge. From Mostar, we will visit several places in its vicinity: the Dervish monastery Blagaj, located under a cliff with the source of crystal-clean water from the Buna River; see medieval town, Pocitelj (ranked as an open air museum); the Catholic pilgrimage center Medjugorje; the amazing Kravica waterfalls; and the real Roman Villa Rustica, established as an agricultural estate in the 4th century AD.
On the way to Trebinje, we will see the archaeological site Radimlja (UNESCO World Heritage site) with medieval carved tombstones, the hilly fortress Stolac, the beautiful Vjetrenica cave, and Zavala monastery, partially located in a cave. Close to Trebinje, we will visit the Orthodox monastery Tvrdos, famous for its old vine cellars, where we can try their award-winning white, rose, and red vines. We will take the road back to Sarajevo, see the cute little Dobricevo monastery, and enjoy the road through Sutjeska National Park.
Overall, with this tour you will visit 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites and 5 sites from the UNESCO Tentative List.
We provide this tour year-round. We recommend you consider having a tour before or after the high season, when it is not so hot and not so crowded but all the sights and attractions are already or are still open. Especially, this applies to elderly people, who need to be careful with sun exposure and high temperatures.
We, at Monterrasol Travel, practice the Slow Tourism philosophy. That means that we work our tours at a pace that allows our clients to have a more authentic experience and a true exploration of each destination we visit. We dismiss the stress, the rush, the tight schedules and the crazy running from spot to spot, specially related to bus travel package tours for large groups.
We love to travel in a relaxed, not hurried way. All our tours have been designed with that key idea in mind, and try to keep balance between the places scheduled to visit and free time to take a break. Also, we do not like to keep our clients for a long time in the car due to the long distances between itinerary points, just the fair amount of time.
Transportation is in a minivan with air conditioner and English speaking driver. Feel free to ask to stop whenever you need, for a nice image or some snack.
This tour (same as the other tours we offer) is available in English and Spanish. Disponible en Español.
