Description
This tour is provided by Monterrasol Travel, a company that specializes in year-round multi-day private car tours for small groups across Central and Southern Europe, especially Greece and the Balkans.
We welcome you to come with us to explore Bosnia-Herzegovina with our all seasons 8 days discovery tour over Bosnia-Herzegovina from Sarajevo. Explore this medieval land and see fortresses, old towns and monasteries. Take this tour as a good example of off-beaten-path travel, a conscious way to travel where you are more mindful of your journey and gain a deeper awareness of the country.
The tour will start with visiting a very important place in Sarajevo, the so called Tunnel of Hope, a famous place as a reminder of the Bosnian war and Sarajevo siege. Next, we will come to visit the Bosnian Pyramids and learn why this place people see as controversial. We will come to sleep in a nice hotel organized in ethno-village style.
The next day will bring us to 2 medieval fortresses, Vranduk and Travnik. After sleeping in Jajce, we will visit there a beautiful waterfall, a medieval fortress with a small underground church, and at the end of this day, we will come to see cute small wooded watermills first mentioned in 1562.
On the way from Jajce to Mostar, we will come to see a Franciscan monastery located on a thin peninsula in the middle of a beautiful lake. There, we will also see a rich local ethnographic museum. In Mostar (UNESCO World Heritage site), we will walk the historical center, learn about the history of this amazing town, and walk over the famous Mostar bridge.
Next day we are going to see a few places around Mostar: the growing popular Catholic pilgrimage center Medjugorje; beautiful natural park Kravica with waterfalls; Mogorjelo, the real Roman Villa Rustica, established as an agricultural estate in the 4th century AD; and before returning to Mostar, we need to see the medieval town Pocitelj, served as an open-air museum.
On the way from Mostar to Trebinje, we will see Blagaj dervish monastery (known also as Blagaj tekke), built in 1520 and located in a picturesque place beneath a high vertical cliff and near the source Buna river emerging from a huge karstic cavern. The next place is Radimlja archaeological site (UNESCO World Heritage site) with medieval carved tombstones. We will also see hilly medieval fortress Stolac and small Orthodox monastery Zavala.
Next day we will spend in Trebinje, to see a small cute historical center, admire a wonderful panoramic view from a hill with a beautiful church, and come to the Orthodox monastery Tvrdos, famous for its old vine cellars, where we can try their awarded white, rose, and red vines. After a second night in Trebinje, we will take the road back to Sarajevo via Sutjeska national park.
Overall, with this tour you will visit 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites and 4 sites from the UNESCO Tentative List.
We provide this tour year-round. We recommend you consider having a tour before or after the high season, when it is not so hot and not so crowded but all the sights and attractions are already or are still open. Especially, this applies to elderly people, who need to be careful with sun exposure and high temperatures.
We, at Monterrasol Travel, practice the Slow Tourism philosophy. That means that we work our tours at a pace that allows our clients to have a more authentic experience and a true exploration of each destination we visit. We dismiss the stress, the rush, the tight schedules and the crazy running from spot to spot, specially related to bus travel package tours for large groups.
We love to travel in a relaxed, not hurried way. All our tours have been designed with that key idea in mind, and try to keep balance between the places scheduled to visit and free time to take a break. Also, we do not like to keep our clients for a long time in the car due to the long distances between itinerary points, just the fair amount of time.
Transportation is in a minivan with air conditioner and English speaking driver. Feel free to ask to stop whenever you need, for a nice image or some snack.
This tour (same as the other tours we offer) is available in English and Spanish. Disponible en Español.
