Playa de Cofete is a beach that often gets the title of the pearl of Fuerteventura island, as well as of the whole Canary archipelago. If you ever wished to feel like you are the only living soul on another planet, then it's vital for you to reach Playa de Cofete! The beach is approximately 12 km long and is situated on the Jandia islet, near the southwest coast of Fuerteventura, separated from it by La Pared isthmus.
Covered with fine white sand, the vastness of Cofete is secluded by 800-meter-high Jandia mountain chain which serves as an epic backdrop for tourists. Both mountains and the beach belong to Jandia Natural Park. To reinforce the legendary feeling, remember that the mentioned mountain ridge used to divide the islet into two Guanche kingdoms of Maxorata and Jandia.
Here, on Playa de Cofete, you will find the wild and untouched grounds, isolated from the rest of the world by the mountains from one side and Atlantic waters from another. Although there are scarcely any modern facilities on this beach, their absence, on the other hand, gives the sense of absolute freedom - walk down the gigantic coastline, sunbathe and imagine yourself on the edge of the world.
You may even try to swim, but a lot of people advise against it since the winds are strong on Playa de Cofete, the waves are pretty high, making it a dangerous place for swimming. With that being said, watch your step! In spite of getting lots of praise, the beach never gets crowded - you will most likely see only a few visitors hanging out here. So, prepare for a long quiet walk by taking spare food, sunscreen, and water, because there is practically nowhere to get all of those on the beach.
However, not far away from the beach car park lies the small Cofete village with a population of about 30 residents. Here, the compact restaurant with local delicacies can be found which is useful in case of you running out of food. The villagers survive mainly due to fishing, goat farming, and shellfishing.
Near the Cofete hamlet, another interesting place may attract your attention - the Villa Winter. This mansion built by Gustav Winter has rumors and theories circling it, such as it being the German Nazi hideout or shelter for their U-boats during World War II. Though nothing was proved, the villa still remains a quite mysterious site. Getting to the beach is another rather tough yet rewarding experience. Starting from Morro del Jable, you have to surmount the 9-kilometer mountain path either on foot, by car or by special bus taking tourists to the Cofete.
Hence, if you are adventurous and would like to experience the fierce natural beauty of Playa de Cofete than get prepared and set out for a journey!
