Flam Railway Museum is a museum situated at the eponymous station on the railway road of Flamsbana in Norway. This road is essentially the branch of the Bergen railway and takes the tourists 20 km down from Myrdal station to the valley of Flamsdalen. This railway is actually one of the steepest, twisted but also the most beautiful roads in the world. Here, you will descend from snowy mountain tops to the green and blue valleys, all in span of about 40 minutes.
On Flam station, you will find the small museum, Flam Railway museum, that tells you the history and hardships of the railway's construction. For the record, building processes began in 1920 and lasted for twenty years, resulting in Flamsbana's official opening in 1940. At the time, they were not entirely automatised, so most of them were happening due to immense physical labour and efforts. The road has 20 tunnels, 18 of which had to be carved out in the rock by hand with available tools.
Bear in mind the weather conditions that were surely not the most favourable and the fact that each meter in stone was worth one month of physical work. Hence, the Flam Railway museum at Flam station gives the overview of the inventory builders had a hundred years ago, technological railway progress in Norway over the years in videos, pictures and explanations. There are a few authentic exhibits like El 9 locomotive, rail-inspecting trolleys and other artifacts. Apart from history, the museum also stores a comfy souvenir shop where you can buy a cool memorable gift to settle on your shelf or mantelpiece.
So, if you have spare 15 minutes, peek in to see what was the cost of the masterpiece of a road you're going to go down. And don't forget about a cute troll souvenir visiting the Flam Railway museum!
