Description
The marangu is the first and oldest route to Kilimanjaro. The route is famously known as the Coca-Cola route; a lot of people claim it is the easiest but that may not be accurate as it does not provide enough time for acclimatization. The route approaches the mountain from south east and offers hut accommodation instead of camps.
The marangu route used to be the most popular route but not anymore, lately machame route has been on the top. Although the route has very few steeps which makes climbing easy, its direct approach to the mountain makes its summit success low compared with those of other routes.
Its scenery profile is not very popular as you ascend and descend on the same path, but still the view is incredible as you pass through rainforest, moorland, high altitude desert and arctic summit habitats
The route can be achieved with the right preparation and a good supportive team while hiking; the trail can be crowded so if you are looking for some privacy it may not be your top option. The marangu route can be completed in five days although we highly recommend the six days itinerary, it should be noted that climbing Kilimanjaro is not a race, and it is important to give your body chance to acclimatize well.
