Description
Climb Kilimanjaro is a bit difficult as the Umbwe route does not provide enough time to acclimate to the altitude, so proceeding slowly is crucial. While traffic on this route is low, the chances of success are not great unless acclimation days are added. The route is offered for a minimum of 6 days, preferably 7 days. This route joins the Machame Route, the Lemosho Route and the Shira Route along the way.
Another route to the summit approaches Uhuru Peak from the west, called the “Western Breach Route.” The strenuous Western Breach climb is 850m, covering approximately 1.25 miles (2 km), requiring scrambling (using both hands and feet) in places. The trail is very beautiful but also very challenging due to its rock formations and steep slopes. The Western breach route gradually became popular with climbers using the Umbwe, Lemosho, Shira and Machame routes until a rock fall in January 2006 claimed the lives of three climbers. In response, Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) closed the Western breach route, but in 2007 KINAPA reopened it on the condition that all customers and their supporting members who wanted to use this option had to sign at the entrance stating They do so at their own risk.

At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.
From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!
