Highlights
Description
Located in the northern part of Tanzania, Tarangire National Park is a lesser-known but highly rewarding destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. Named after the Tarangire River, which flows through the park, it covers about 2,850 square kilometers and is one of the Tanzania Northern Circuit’s most unique safari destinations.
The landscape of Tarangire is incredibly diverse, offering a stunning mix of savannah, wetlands, and dense woodlands. The park is bordered by the Tarangire River, which serves as a vital water source for the animals, especially during the dry season. The park’s mighty baobab trees, which dot the landscape, are one of its most distinctive features. These ancient trees, known as the “upside-down trees,” are an iconic symbol of Africa and provide an excellent backdrop for photography.
Throughout the park, visitors will encounter a mix of open plains, wooded hills, and swamps. The river also feeds into the Lau Forest and swamp areas, which attract a variety of wildlife, especially during the dry season when water is scarce elsewhere.
While Tarangire is smaller than other parks like Serengeti or Ngorongoro, it boasts an impressive diversity of wildlife, making it a top destination for those seeking a rich safari experience. The park is home to a large population of elephants, making it one of the best places in Tanzania to observe these magnificent creatures up close. In fact, Tarangire is often called “The Elephant Sanctuary” because of the high number of elephants that live here.
The park is also home to lions, leopards, buffaloes, and cheetahs, providing opportunities to spot members of the Big Five. During the dry season, animals congregate around the river and waterholes, making game viewing easier and more concentrated. Besides the Big Five, you can also see giraffes, zebras, impalas, wildebeest, gazelles, and waterbucks. Baboons and monkeys are commonly seen in the park as well.
Birdwatchers will find Tarangire a haven for birdlife. The park is home to over 500 species of birds, making it a prime destination for birdwatching. You can spot a variety of waterfowl, eagles, vultures, hornbills, and even migratory species. In the wet season, large numbers of pink flamingos can be seen around the lake and wetlands, creating a stunning visual spectacle.
The best time to visit Tarangire National Park is during the dry season from June to October when wildlife is concentrated around the Tarangire River and waterholes. This is also the best time for viewing the Big Five and other species. The wet season (November to April) brings lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, and great birdwatching opportunities. Although some areas may be harder to access due to rainfall, the wet season offers a unique and tranquil safari experience.
Tarangire offers several exciting activities for visitors:
Lake Manyara National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is one of the country’s most diverse and scenic parks. Situated at the base of the Great Rift Valley, it covers an area of approximately 330 square kilometers, with nearly one-third of the park being covered by the shimmering waters of Lake Manyara, a soda lake that gives the park its name. Lake Manyara is well-known for its stunning landscapes, varied wildlife, and unique ecosystem, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for its dramatic landscapes. The park offers a stunning mix of different environments, including lush forests, grasslands, soda lake, and woodland areas. The Great Rift Valley escarpment, which rises sharply from the floor of the valley, forms the park's western boundary, offering sweeping views of the lake and surrounding landscapes.
One of the most striking features of the park is the lake itself, which is a key habitat for many species of birds, especially flamingos, who flock to the lake’s shallow waters. The park's freshwater wetlands also attract a variety of other waterbirds, including pelicans, herons, and storks, making it a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts.
Lake Manyara National Park is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, making it a fascinating place for safaris. The park supports a variety of habitats that allow different species of animals to thrive. Here, visitors can encounter a variety of large mammals, including elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and impalas.
One of the park's unique attractions is its famous tree-climbing lions. While the lions of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are often seen on the ground, the lions in Lake Manyara are known for their behavior of climbing and resting in the trees, particularly the large acacia trees. This unusual behavior is still not entirely understood, but it is a rare sight that draws many visitors.
In addition to the large mammals, the park is also home to a variety of smaller animals, such as baboons, monkeys, hyenas, and a variety of antelope species, including kudu and waterbuck. Leopards and cheetahs can also be spotted, though they are more elusive.
Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania's premier birdwatching locations, with over 400 species of birds recorded. The park's wetlands and the lake itself attract a vast range of bird species. During the wet season, the lake fills up and becomes home to greater and lesser flamingos, as well as pelicans, cormorants, and waterfowl. The birdlife in the park is particularly abundant in the birdwatching hotspots near the lake's shore and in the woodland areas.
Visitors to Lake Manyara can enjoy a range of activities within the park, including:
