Description
The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less traveled routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a breathtaking journey through diverse landscapes and ample time for acclimatization. This route is renowned for its beauty, wildlife sightings, and gradual ascent, making it a popular choice for those seeking a more immersive and adventurous trekking experience to Africa's highest peak.
Beginning on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route typically spans over seven to nine days, allowing for a more gradual ascent and better acclimatization to the altitude. The longer duration also enhances the chances of summit success and reduces the risk of altitude-related illnesses.
The journey starts at the Londorossi Gate, where trekkers register and begin their ascent through the pristine rainforests of the Lemosho Glades. The lush vegetation is teeming with biodiversity, offering glimpses of endemic flora and fauna, including colobus monkeys, exotic birds, and colorful butterflies.
As the trail gradually gains elevation, trekkers emerge from the dense rainforest into the heath and moorland zone, characterized by giant lobelias and other high-altitude flora. The ever-changing landscape provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding savannah plains and distant peaks, creating an immersive and awe-inspiring experience.
One of the highlights of the Lemosho Route is the Shira Plateau, a vast volcanic plateau that offers expansive views of the mountain and its neighboring peaks. Trekkers spend a night camping beneath the star-studded sky, surrounded by towering cliffs and rugged terrain, before continuing their ascent towards the summit.
The route then merges with the Machame Route at Lava Tower, where trekkers pause for a rest and acclimatization. From here, the trail ascends steadily through the alpine desert zone, characterized by barren landscapes and surreal rock formations, towards the summit of Uhuru Peak.
The final push to the summit begins in the early hours of the morning, allowing trekkers to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the African plains. As the trail winds its way towards the summit, trekkers navigate steep switchbacks and icy terrain, pushing their physical and mental limits to reach the iconic sign marking the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Standing at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, Uhuru Peak offers unparalleled views of the surrounding glaciers, crater rim, and distant horizons, providing a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment like no other.
After celebrating their summit success, trekkers begin their descent via the Mweka Route, traversing through diverse ecosystems and reflecting on their incredible journey up Africa's tallest peak.

At Stella Point (5756m), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit. From the summit, we now descend, continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
