Gangaramaya Temple was the project of Hikkaduwa Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera whose construction started in the 19th century. He was a well-known scholar-monk. As it dates back to the 19th century, therefore, it is regarded as one of the oldest Buddhist Temple built in Colombo. Devendra Sri Jinaratana Nayake was taken care of the temple after the death of Sri Sumangala. Dynamic leadership and vision of the Sri Jinatana turned the temple from a small prayer place to the building of international stature. Independence Memorial Hall was actually built to commemorate the struggle of Si Lankan people against the rule of the British Empire. After independence, the local legislature took full responsibility for the Sri Lankan affairs and till February 4, 1948, it is legislating for the local population. It is located along with Independence Memorial Hall in Independence Square which was formally called Torrington Square.
