Overview
The neighborhood of Santa Cruz and the Jewish quarter is the most beautiful neighborhood of Seville, but with the saddest history. In this neighborhood we can discover all its stories, legends, mysteries and alleys that make it a unique and different neighborhood.
Highlights
Description
In the heart of the historic center and embraced by the walls of the Real Alcázar, the Santa Cruz neighborhood is one of the largest Jewish quarters in Spain. And its labyrinthine streets, which smell of spring orange blossom, have more than 1500 years of history.
In this essential visit, we start explaining in the Patio de Banderas an essential part of the Real Alcázar, passing later to the Plaza de la Judería through a small tunnel that introduces you to the authentic Jewish quarter. From Vida Street to Agua Street, the history of Santa Cruz translates into the Sephardic Jewish culture that inhabited Seville and later suffered the ravages of the various expulsions.
Also, in the Plaza de Doña Elvira and Plaza de los Venerables, we become witnesses of Don Juan Tenorio, a classic of Spanish literature for which its writer, the Valladolid-born Zorrilla, settled in Seville to be inspired by what was also a neighborhood of old taverns.
Already in the Plaza de Santa Cruz and the church of Santa Maria la Blanca, we explain the three ancient synagogues of Seville that served as the backbone for this neighborhood, which undoubtedly has been the greatest witness to the history of Seville.
Come with us to walk these streets with a local guide, because more than the landscapes, are their stories what you can not miss.
