COUNTRY BIRDS IN THE FIGHTING BULL LAND
It is a journey inland through wheat and sunflower fields and wood-pastures. (We also pass fighting bulls – interesting to see even though we do not like bullfighting!). The small town of Niebla has an old castle and a Moorish 1000-year-old wall around the centre that is home to one of the main colonies of Lesser Kestrel in Andalucia.
Residents: Marsh Harrier, Black-shouldered Kite, Little Owl, Cattle Egret, Hoopoe, White Stork, Stone Curlew, Little Ringed Plover, Calandra & Crested Larks, Stonechat, Sardinian & Dartford Warblers, Zitting Cisticola, Griffon Vulture.
Winter Birds: Skylark, Crane, Golden Plover, Lapwing, Hen Harrier, Chiffchaff, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush.
Summer Birds: Lesser Kestrel, Booted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Bee-eater, Black-eared Wheatear, Melodious Warbler, Nightingale, Red-rumped Swallow, Pallid Swift.
Migrants: Redstart, Whinchat, Willow Warbler, Northern Wheatear.

Huelva’s traditional countryside survives the advance of the modern fruit farming. We visit the wheat fields, olive grooves and Spanish dehesas between Huelva City, Trigueros, San Juan and Niebla not far from the motorway A49 Seville-Portugal.
