Day 1 : One Day Safari Depart: 08:00 – 09:00 Tour Details: Get up close and personal with Africa's famous Big Five and other wild animals on our Full Day Safari Tour, a two and a half hour drive from Cape Town. As the Game Reserve is situated in the Western Cape, you will not need to worry about the risk of malaria. Enjoy some of the Cape's most unique flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes and wildlife all in one day! The elephants and lions have all been rescued by the team at the reserve, after encountering a virtual wipe out due to settlement and agricultural development. You will also find the cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre which was founded in 2001, home to numerous cheetahs. Inverdoorn Game Reserve Enjoy a two-hour safari tour across the 10 000 ha game reserve in an open air 4x4 discovering the Big Five. As you enter, you may come across a herd of antelope before heading down towards the lions’ reserve. You will be amazed by the majestic sight of the male Cape Barbary lion which is a rare find! From thereon you will encounter an endless variety of antelope species, from the beautifully marked oryx, elands, wildebeests, threatened rhinos, springboks and herds of zebras. After thrilling twists and turns spotting giraffes, elephants and hippos you will arrive at the last stop before returning to the lodge for lunch – the cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre, where you will gain key insight about their behaviour. (2h) The Ceres Fruit Valley The early morning pick-up from your hotel will give you the chance to see all the beauty of Cape Town's landscapes in the beautiful colours of the morning light. We then head to the world-famous Ceres Valley, named after the Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility, which will have you gazing into the beauty of stunning sceneries and plantations bathing in the beautiful valley encircled by a majestic mountain range. Ceres offers many nature walks, cherry-picking during season and a variety of diverse birdlife found in the unique Fynbos vegetation. In winter, you may encounter a magnificent sight of snow falling on the higher mountain regions, making Ceres Valley a highly popular attraction. (drive by) The Klein Karoo The Inverdoorn Game Reserve is located in the Klein Karoo, one of the most magnificent areas in the Western Cape, bounded on the North by the Swartberg (Black Mountain), and on the South by the Langeberg and Outeniqua mountain chains. The semi desert natural region was first explored by European settlers in the late 17th century, who came across only Khoisan people living in this dry area. Hout Bay & Seal Island Boat Trip The small fishing village of Hout Bay is often jokingly referred to as the ‘Republic of Hout Bay’ by Cape Town locals, and has the sense of being an entirely separate town. Situated on the very tip of the peninsula, the area spans across landscapes such as rugged cliffs, unique fauna and flora, and vast open spaces. See over 250 species of birdlife, baboons, bucks and the Cape Mountain Zebra. Explore the Cape of Good Hope, a world-renowned landmark, and monuments in honour of two of the world's most famous explorers - Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Dias, who discovered Cape Point in 1488. No Cape Town tour is complete without a visit to Cape Point. (1h 30min) Penguin Colony & Simon's Town A trip to Boulders Beach you will not forget - one of the only places in the world that you can swim alongside penguins. Boulders Beach has grown rapidly to over 3000 penguins since only two breeding Jackass penguins settled in that arrived from Dyer Island, near Gansbaai. Simon's Town is the seat of the SA Navy, and has a charming coastal town atmosphere and a vibrant history. Here you can find a thriving harbour, The Warrior Toy Museum and The South African Navy Museum. View the frigates and submarines from a distance that are docked at the Naval Base harbour. (30min) Kalk Bay The quirky seaside village of Kalk Bay runs along the Main Road, with the False Bay coastline running on one side, and the mountain on the other. Along the Main Road lies a host of veritable treasure troves, from antique shops to costume shops, cobbled streets, vintage bookstores, bakeries, the famous Brass Bell restaurant and plenty more. The area is also excellent for whale watching during whale season (June to November). Muizenberg Muizenberg is a world-renowned surfing spot, where people from all parts of society join in communion to enjoy the wonders of the ocean. Situated on the beach, you will find an array of the famous colourful beach huts and plenty of restaurants and surf shops. Shark spotters keep a lookout for potential danger roaming in the bay. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, one of ten botanical gardens in Africa, offer visitors a haven of peace and serenity at the foot of the Devil's Peak mountain. Stellenbosch We start the morning off at the Stellenbosch winelands, only 20 minutes out of Cape Town, which offers a majestic scenery that is entirely different to the Cape Peninsula. You will discover different grape varieties that grow in the area such as Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, and the uniquely South African Pinotage. You will also learn about the Méthode Cap Classique developed in the region, that emulates and rivals the very best French champagnes. Stellenbosch is a small but very lively town with a famous university and numerous activities such as wine cellar tours and tastings, museums, galleries and strawberry picking. (1h45) Franschhoek We then head to Franschhoek - a wine-lover's dream destination - also known as "the French corner", an old Huguenot village. With its numerous streets and estates with French names, the town will make you feel completely bewildered, feeling like you were in France in another era. You will be completely enchanted by the town's charm and its peaceful environment. You will get the chance to taste the region's delicacies, cheeses and its best wines. Bonus - our guides are fluent in English and French! (2h) Drakenstein Prison Drakenstein, also known as Victor Verster Prison, is located between Franschhoek and Paarl. The prison is famous for being the one where Nelson Mandela spent the last fourteen months of his imprisonment for campaigning against Apartheid, afterwards leaving a free man in February 1990! Here you will get to see a recently unveiled, larger than life-size statue of Nelson Mandela raising his fist, not in anger, but as a well-known gesture of defiance, usually accompanied by the freedom slogan - 'amandla awethu' in isiZulu or 'power to the people' in English. Paarl We end off the tour at the town of Paarl, offering you a great perspective into Afrikaans culture and tradition. The district is specially well-known for its Pearl Mountain or "Paarl Rock". The huge granite rock is formed by three rounded outcrops that make up Paarl Mountain and has been compared in majesty to Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) in Australia. Paarl offers you a diverse range of wine farms, the famous Spice Route, the Taal Monument (the Afrikaans language monument), coffee shops, breweries and plenty more. These tours take you from the legendary District Six, to some of Cape Town's thriving township such as Langa, where you will learn about the Dutch and British rule of the Cape, slavery, Apartheid, freedom and democracy. You will also have the chance to enjoy local cuisine as well as traditional healers, visit local schools, vibrant churches, shebeens and many other fascinating things to see and do. The people you meet on your township tour will leave you with a new admiration of the South African philosophy of ‘Ubuntu’, meaning a person is a person through other people, as they share a bit of insight into daily life in the townships of Cape Town. District Six The former residential area of District Six is one of the most famous Apartheid areas – once a thriving neighbourhood, the area was deserted after Apartheid government regulated forced removals of up to 60 000 people in the 1970s. The District Six Museum offers a colourful history into the area as it once was, and a monument to preserve the memories of the thousands of people previously living there, as well as the Apartheid years and the area’s downfall. (30min) Langa Langa is one of Cape Town’s thriving townships, and was also established in the Apartheid days after thousands of residents from other areas were forcibly relocated. The area was named after Langalibalele - a chief and renowned rainmaker who was imprisoned on Robben Island in 1873 for rebelling against the Natal government. One of the highlights on this township tour is a visit to one of the area’s famous charismatic churches – something that is sure to leave you enthralled! (sundays Only) (45min) Entrepreneurs Township entrepreneurs such as tailors, barber shops and little markets are everywhere in the township. You will have the opportunity to take some African souvenirs home with you. (15) Have a beer at a shebeen A shebeen is a traditional pub and brewery, or informal beer house, in the township. Locals will make you feel most welcome and you will have the option to taste traditional beer. (20min) Church Every Sunday there is a vibrant and colourful church service (30min) Despite the tragic and often troubled history of Cape Town’s townships and informal settlements, the areas still retain a strong sense of culture, with a vibrant community atmosphere and plenty of food, entertainment and enterprise. Many community arts projects can be found along the townships, with crafts such as beading, weaving, wire goods and fabric making all to be discovered. The ever-present local shebeens offer another side to life – with South African beer, braais and a strong sense of community to be enjoyed.
