What's included
Itinerary
Upon your arrival at the airport or terrestrial terminal in Puerto Maldonado, our Ecotourism Guide will warmly welcome you. We’ll then proceed to our office for registration, allowing you to leave your heavy backpacks behind and take only what’s necessary for the Amazon Expedition. Next, we’ll transfer to the port, where our motorboat awaits.
Our journey begins with a 45-minute ride along the Mother of God River. We’ll stop at the control post to register (Lago Sandoval Reserve). From there, we’ll embark on a 1-hour and 30-minute walk, with periodic stops to observe various species, including plants, birds, insects, butterflies, and some monkey species. Upon reaching a small port, we’ll board a canoe, navigating through a narrow forested channel.
This channel leads to the open waters of Expedition Lake Sandoval, offering picturesque views of water, palm trees, and expansive aguajales. The mysterious sounds of other animals will greet us as we venture further—frogs, toads, and migratory birds. While crossing the lake, we’ll arrive at our shelter, just 4 minutes from the port. You’ll be accommodated in a private room with a shower and bathroom.
After a short break, we’ll explore the Amazon’s flora and fauna, observing species in their natural habitat. Following dinner, equipped with flashlights or headlamps, we’ll embark on a night walk through the forest, searching for the elusive night monkey (Musmuqui), frogs, snakes, and nocturnal insects. We’ll return to our shelter for a comfortable night’s rest.
Early in the morning, we’ll set out on wooden canoes, rowing around Lake Sandoval in hopes of spotting giant river otters, the world’s largest otter species and a crucial protected species in the reserve. These otters live in small, territorial family groups and feed on fish during the early hours, consuming up to 4 kilos of fish per day.
Throughout the day, we’ll have the opportunity to observe various bird species, such as herons, kingfishers, cormorants, and shanshos, along with migratory birds and turtles on fallen trees. After lunch, we’ll embark on a jungle trek, immersing ourselves in the Amazon’s primary forest, home to ancient trees like Shihuahuacos, kapok, and renacos. These towering trees are unique to this forest type and host a variety of mammals.
As we explore, you may be lucky enough to spot a lurking jaguar, birds like parrots and partridges feeding on fruit, and even hallucinogenic plants like ayahuasca. On our return to the lodge, we’ll witness the oasis created by the sun’s descent, a perfect time to spot the famous black caimans and other nocturnal animals.
We’ll rise early to cross Lake Sandoval and walk approximately 20 minutes to visit the Collpa de Palmeras, a clay lick where various macaw and parrot species gather to consume palm tree wood rich in essential minerals. This supplement aids in digestion and counteracts the toxins they ingest from unripe fruits.
After observing this spectacle, we’ll return to the lodge for breakfast and a brief rest. Later, we’ll cross the Sandoval Reserve by canoe, venturing into the floodplain forest. A 2-hour walk among ancient trees like Shihuahuaco, Lupuna, and oje awaits us.
Back at the lodge for lunch and an afternoon nap, we’ll return to the lake by canoe, this time visiting a 12-meter-high tower with breathtaking sunset views. The day concludes with dinner and another night in the heart of the Amazon.
After breakfast, we’ll take a boat to Puerto Maldonado, then embark on a 2-hour journey to the Tambopata River port, observing various species along the way. We may even catch a glimpse of the majestic Jaguar sunbathing on the riverbanks.
Upon reaching our “Amazon Tambopata Lodge Inn,” you’ll be welcomed with a typical Amazonian aphrodisiac soft drink. Accommodation awaits in your respective room, and after lunch, we’ll explore the primary forest, home to myriad creatures like insects, spiders, toads, butterflies, monkeys, and more.
Following dinner, we’ll embark on a nocturnal adventure, using lanterns to observe alligators, capybaras, and perhaps some nocturnal felines lurking near the river’s edge.
Today marks the final day of your tour. After an early breakfast, we’ll pack our backpacks and prepare for our return journey to Puerto Maldonado. Along the way, we’ll make stops at communities, Lake Condenado, the 3 chimbadas, and the native community of hell, where you can learn about the customs and habitat of native people.
In the afternoon, we’ll arrive in Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the ground terminal or airport, concluding your remarkable Tambopata Macaw Clay Lick expedition.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this unforgettable Amazonian adventure, filled with unique wildlife encounters and awe-inspiring natural beauty. Safe travels!
