Highlights
Description
Join us on an unforgettable journey to Nizwa, the captivating old capital of Oman. Our first stop is the renowned Nizwa Souq, one of the country's largest marketplaces. Here, you'll discover a vibrant scene with a wide array of vendors selling everything from fresh fish, meat, and vegetables to exquisite pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, and unique souvenirs. Don't miss the exciting Friday cattle market, where local villagers gather to showcase their donkeys, goats, cattle, sheep, and chickens in a lively open-air marketplace.
Right next to the souq stands the magnificent Nizwa Fortress, now transformed into a fascinating museum. Immerse yourself in the rich history as you freely explore its impressive rooms, passages, and towers. This architectural marvel bears witness to the remarkable economic and military achievements of the early Yaruba dynasty in the mid-17th century. With its strategic design and cleverly placed traps, the fortress was an impenetrable stronghold built to withstand even the fiercest attacks.
Experience the beauty of Nizwa's water canals that run throughout the area, with Falaj Daris being the most significant. As a UNESCO cultural site, Falaj Daris is formed by two streams that provide irrigation for a large part of the town. Join us for a leisurely stroll along some sections of this historic waterway, soaking in the tranquil ambiance and marveling at its importance in sustaining the community.
Continuing our journey, we drive to Al Hamra, where you'll have the opportunity to explore the charming old village. Step inside a delightful little museum housed in a restored traditional house, where a friendly Omani woman will guide you through a captivating seven-bedroom residence. Watch as she demonstrates the art of traditional coffee-making, food preparation, and pottery techniques from bygone days. After the tour, relax in an authentic Omani Majilis, where you'll savor the flavors of Omani coffee or tea alongside delicious dates.
Our next destination is the picturesque village of Misfat al-Abriyeen, nestled on a steep slope at the foot of Jebel Shams, just a few kilometers from Al Hamra. This enchanting village boasts centuries-old homes and narrow streets, offering a glimpse into the past. Explore the village at your own pace, spending at least 1.5 hours taking in the sights and sounds. Follow the marked footpaths that wind through the village and its breathtaking surroundings. Marvel at the lush orchards, date palms, and vibrant vegetable gardens sustained by the extensive falaj system. As the day draws to a close, we'll make our way back to Muscat, filled with memories of an incredible journey.
