Kathmandu Durbar Square is a landmark historic attraction by ancient Newari architecture. The high temples, popular shrines and the old royal palace located in the heart of the capital city Kathmandu or simply known as Hanuman Dhoka Durbar square. The name Hanuman Dhoka Durbar square came from the statue of Hanuman (the monkey devotee of Lord Ram). Built by King Pratap Malla in 1672 A.D. Four storeyed home King Prithvi Narayan Shah used to work in 1770, is Basantapur Durbar(palace).
Besides these durbars (royal palaces), the quadrangle surrounds the squares, reviling courtyards and temples. Kathmandu durbar square is situated at the core of the antiquated city in Kathmandu. It surrounds both Hindu and Buddhist sanctuary in front of the old Royal Palace. Previously palaces were held by the Malla and Shah Kings who ruled over the city.
