Upper Mustang Trek -15 Days

The Upper Mustang Trek takes you on a journey to the hidden world of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Mustang. The region is known as the ‘Forbidden Kingdom” is rare, raw, and wild, nestled in the Northern part of Mustang District which is regarded as the most preserved region in the world. The landscape and people here are frozen in time, a place where culture and traditions remain the same for centuries.

The Upper Mustang Trek is a perfect blend of nature and culture. The land here is arid resembling the Tibetan Plateau, with endless expanses of yellow and grey rolling hills eroded by wind and snowcapped mountains in the backdrops. About the culture along with this trail witness the true Tibetan Buddhist culture, visit ancient monasteries, and learn about the lifestyle and culture of the indigenous people. Apart from natural and cultural factors, the area is dotted with various cave networks, home to the ancient people of the region.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m/4265ft)

Upon landing at Kathmandu airport, a representative from Overland trek Nepal will welcome you and assist you with your accommodation. After a brief rest head out to explore the city. In the evening join in for a dinner program and later attend a brief orientation regarding the trip.

Day 2: Drive to Pokhara – (800m/2625ft) – 6/7hrs

After breakfast head on a long drive towards Pokhara. Following the winding roads of the Prithvi Highway. Upon reaching Pokhara head towards your accommodation later head out to take a stroll around the banks of Phewa lake.

Day 3: Fly to Jomsom (2760m/9056ft); 4hrs Trek to Kagbeni (2840m/9318ft)

After breakfast heads towards the domestic airport and catches a flight towards Jomsom. The flight takes you hovering above the lush jungles to high-arid landscapes. Once you land at Jomsom after a brief rest head out towards Kagbeni. The trek takes you traversing through the arid landscape on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River.

The village of Kagbeni is nestled on the top of a cliff, providing views of lush agriculture belts and arid landscapes of the region. Upon reaching Kagbeni head out to explore the region and learn about the culture and lifestyle of the people.

Day 4: Trek to Chele (3100m/10171ft) – 5hrs

Today's trek will take you to the restricted area of the Upper Mustang. Halfway through the trek at a check post, your permits will be inspected. After the permits are checked, head to the eastern side of the Kali Gandaki riverbank and from here you will be traversing across cliffs and ridges towards Tangbe village. From Tangbe head towards Chhusang and after crossing the Kali Gandaki River, you will reach Chele village perched on a hilltop.

Day 5: Trek to Shyangmochen (3800m/12468ft) – 5hrs

Today's trek is different, and some section of the trail is like those you have never seen before. You will be traversing across steep barren land and copper-red canyons. Along the way, you will come across several Chorthens. As you progress on the trail you will reach the village of Samar. From here crossing high Himalayan agricultural lands, cliffs, and ridges you will reach the village of Shyangmochen.

Day 6: Trek to Ghami (3510m/11516ft) – 4hrs

Start early, ascending out of the Kali Gandaki valley. A short hike up a ridge will bring to a pass, crossing the pass and descending downwards will lead to the settlement of Gehling. Following the trail, you will be traversing the Nyi La pass towards the village of Charang and finally to Ghami village. The village is nestled on a cliff, dotted with whitewashed mud and stone houses.

Day 7: Trek to Tsarang (3575m/11730ft) – 5hrs

Today you will be traversing across the arid region of Mustang, a landscape that has remains frozen in time for centuries. The trail is rough, but the views are extraordinary, witness views of the Rocky Mountains, high cliffs, and desert-like topography.

Along the way, you will pass the Charang village which is nestled in the Charang Chu Canyon. Explore the Gompa of Charang village, learn about Himalayan Buddhism, and witness the collection of ancient statues and thangkas. After exploring the gompa head towards Tsarang.

Day 8: Trek to Lo Manthang (3840m/12599ft) – 4hrs

Today you be heading towards the forbidden kingdom of Lo Manthang. Once a capital the capital of the Kingdom of Lo. Following the trail, you will pass the settlement of Lo Gear. Along with the trail witness views of majestic Tilicho, Nilgiri, Annapurna I, and other mountain ranges. Explore ancient monasteries and chorthen. Upon reaching Lo Manthang head towards your accommodation and later head out to explore the region.

Day 9: Trek to Lo Manthang (3840m/12599ft) – 4hrs

Today before dawn head out to any vantage point and witness the grand views during sunrise. After breakfast head out to explore the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang.

These ancient settlements have around 150 whitewashed mud and brick houses, several gompas and monasteries, and the King's Palace. The five-story Palace is the oldest structure in the walled city, situated in the middle of the city.

Visit the famous Champa Lhakang, which features a large statue of Buddha, and the walls of the building are decorated with Mandalas. Next head towards Namgyal Gompa located on a hilltop. The monastery holds social, cultural as well as legal significance. Namgyal Gompa also functions as a local courthouse. Visit the 15th-century Thubchen Gompa with a big red assembly hall.

Next head towards Choprang gompa, locally known as New Gompa, and get an insight into local culture and tradition. At last head towards, Tsechen Shedrubling Monastic School, a part of the Monastic Museum, where young monks of the area residents.

Day 10: Trek to Dhakmar 3830m/12465ft- 6hrs.

After breakfast head towards Dhakmar. Traversing across high Himalayan arid landscapes, the trek takes you mostly on downhill sections today. Witness the grand beauty of the landscapes and meet the indigenous people passing through various settlements. Once you reach Dhakmar head out to explore the region.

Day 11: Trek to Chele (3100m/10171ft) – 5hrs

Today's trek is short and takes you to various changing landscapes. Along the way witness various cave networks, once which were used as shelter by the people of this region. Explore various monasteries and chorthen all along the way. Upon reaching Chele head towards your tea house and later head out to explore the region and learn about the lifestyle and culture of the mountain people.

Day 12: Trek to Jomsom (2760m/9056ft) – 6hrs

Following the downward track head towards Jomsom. The trail takes you across various settlements along the high arid landscapes. Upon reaching Jomsom head towards your accommodation. Later celebrate your last night in the mountains and the success of your trek with your teammates.

Day 13: Fly to Pokhara – 25 minutes

After breakfast heads towards the airport and catches a flight towards Pokhara. Once you reach Pokhara head towards your accommodation. Later explore the city of lakes, there are various attractions that you can choose from. Later in the evening head out to explore the banks of Phewa lake and visit various pubs and restaurants around the region.

Day 14: Drive back to Kathmandu – 7hrs

Today head on a long drive towards Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu head towards your accommodation and later, for a stroll around Thamel, a touristic hub of Kathmandu. In the evening join in for a special dinner program to mark the end of your trek with your team.

Day 15: Fly back home

Our staff will drop you off at the airport, you’ll bid farewell to your newfound friends as well as Nepal.
