Highlights
Description
Mardi Himal is a lesser-known gem in Nepal's Annapurna region. A fitting and enchanting escape from the modern lifestyle, you will venture into the untouched wilderness of the Himalayas in none other than the popular Annapurna region of Nepal. Targeted for beginners and veterans alike, this program from Trek Me Nepal is a perfect alternative to more crowded routes of Annapurna. The breathtaking mountain vistas and rich cultural experiences define this moderately-difficult trek.
The journey takes you through spectacular landscapes that transform dramatically with changing elevation. You'll start from near subtropical forests, heading up through rhododendron forests with their crimson blooms, and gradually ascending to alpine high-altitude climates. In spring, rhododendrons will paint the hills red, through which, the trek is even more joyful. Ancient forests of oak and bamboo will create a uniquely beautiful and charming atmosphere. And high above, white crystal-clear mountain peaks will grace every step of your way. Rivers of pristine waters coming downstream, will cascade down moss-covered rocks. The epic beauty of this trek is simply indescribable in words. You have to see it in person.
Ascending along the hills, thick vegetation will give way to partially-rugged terrain, and still higher up, a complete dominion of the alpine environment awaits you. With unobstructed views of the Annapurna range from several viewpoints, you will be rewarded with scenes of several Himalayan giants. Annapurna South, Fishtail, and Mardi Himal are some of the more prominent peaks on this trail, while other lesser-known peaks will be visible as part of the greater Annapurna Massif. Especially notable is the spire of the sacred Fishtail, which, it will seem, can be touched just by stretching out your hands!
If you happen to be here in Spring, the rhododendron blooms will grace the place, which, along with a mild temperature, will make for a wonderful trip. However in the Spring, mountain sightings will be less. But in Autumn, the skies will be crystal-clear; which, when combined with stable weather and sumptuous mountain vistas, is the more preferred season among trekkers. Winters are harsh and cold here, especially in the upper regions and the trails get too slippery too quickly — posing a perpetual threat to the trekker.
Arriving in the lower reaches of the trail, you will be suddenly immersed in the local villages with their time-worn traditions and hospitality. In the village of Lwang, you will find that the Gurung community has maintained their rich traditions. Visitors can experience genuine Nepali hospitality by mingling with the locals, eating their food, and sleeping in their homes. Along the route, you will see villages with stone houses and wood, with at least one white peak as their backdrop. Such is the beauty of the place. You will, in essence, see people who have created a lifestyle that's harmonious with Nature. Terraced fields, livestock, yak-herding, and craft-making — these are some of the largely unchanged activities which you will see in this region.
Moving from camps to teahouses, you will taste the taste of basic accommodation, hearty breakfasts, and limited facilities. Combine this with chats from fellow-trekkers who have come here from around the world — this is the experience that you'll have here. Although you do not need previous trekking experience, you should be physically fit and be able to walk five to six hours daily (ascents and descents) across varying terrain.
This trek is not just a regular one, but a journey through diversely rich ecosystems, traditional cultures, and the best Himalayan vistas. Get ready for an authentic Nepali experience — a choice ideal for the adventurer in you.

We will pass through rhododendron forests, thick bamboo woods, and lush vegetation. Along the way, breathtaking views of terraced rice-fields and majestic mountains will keep us moving along. Nearing half the day's trek, we will be arriving at Pothana for a break and refreshments. This section of the trek is pleasant, with steady ascents. Although the terrain is varied, it will test your stamina and endurance a bit. Upon reaching the hamlet of Pitam Deurali, you will be greeted with splendid views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges. Check into a cosy teahouse, and spend the evening enjoying the food and views of mountain vistas.
Day 4: Trek from Pitam Deurali to Forest camp (2,600m | 5 1/2 hrs); Overnight in a Camp-house
Start with a hearty breakfast at Pitam Deurali — with magnificent views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri and Hiunchuli mountains. Your first steps are through beautiful forests of pine and rhododendron, a welcome experience at the beginning of the day. As you trek further in the fresh mountain air, the sounds of birds and light breezes will pull you towards the day's destination. Ascending gently through hemlock and oak forests, a clearing in the forest will come into view. This serene location is the campsite called Forest Camp, nestled among the trees and radiating with a cheerful aura — made by the presence of several nationalities. Begin with a steep ascent through rhododendron forests until you reach Low Camp. Catch a breather here, and enjoy breathtaking views of Annapurna and Machhapuchhre mountain ranges. Further up the trail narrows, which will later open up to alpine meadows with stunning panoramas. In this section, the path can be quite challenging, especially because of the steep rocky climbs. Treading ahead, you will arrive at High Camp (3,600m), where the scenery becomes extraordinarily dramatic. Surrounded by majestic peaks, you will hop into a cosy teahouse, enjoy a meal, and go to bed with the Himalayas right out your window.
Day 6: Early Morning Hike Upper View Point - Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m) - Back to High Camp and Trek Down to Low Camp (3,050m | 7 hrs); Overnight in a Teahouse
This is the day when you'll be reaching the highest point of this trek, the attraction and the star of this journey — the Mardi Himal Base Camp. Set off early from High Camp and carefully tread along rocky slopes for four hours to reach the Base Camp. A snow-laden surface with breathtaking views of Annapurna I, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchchhre peaks. Take some photos, enjoy the panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and pristine landscapes; and get inspired. From here, retrace your route back to High Camp after basking in the stunning natural beauty. Descend further through lush forests back to Low Camp and hop in a teahouse for well-deserved food and rest.
Day 7: Trek from Low Camp to Lwang (1,560m | 6 hrs) and Drive to Pokhara (1 hr); Overnight in a Hotel
You will begin the trek from Low Camp to the village of Lwang after a quick breakfast. Descending from Low Camp, you'll first go through dense forests, terraced fields, and sparse villages. An ever-present backdrop of the Machhapuchchhre mountain will entice you through the meandering paths. Views of vibrant rhododendron and bamboo forests with white peaks in the background, are never-ending memories of this place. The blue sky and the green valleys below will make for a heart-throbbing experience. You won't know when you arrived at Lwang, a village known for its hospitable people, rich cultural heritage, and popular homestay. Nearby, you can visit the organic tea plantations and sample fresh brews from the tea gardens. After an authentic experience of Nepali lifestyle in the hills, you'll drive to Pokhara.
Day 8: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu (1,350m | 6-8 hrs); Overnight in a Hotel
After breakfast, we will begin the scenic eight-hour drive back to Kathmandu. Right after embarking you will have final glimpses of the majestic Annapurna mountain range coming out of Pokhara. The route is scenic, with mesmerising views of the changing landscapes, but the ongoing construction and expansion in the highway means the trip will be a slow one. Leaving behind the serene beauty of Pokhara, you will have plenty of time to reflect on the remarkable adventure you had in the past week. Later, upon arriving in Kathmandu you will immediately notice the vibrant energy of the city — a stark contrast to the peaceful trails you just travelled. In the evening, you can explore around, visit shops for souvenirs, or simply relax in a session of massage. Later, as we gather for the dinner, we will share stories of our unforgettable trip in the Annapurna Region.
Day 9: Departure from Kathmandu
After breakfast or depending upon your flight schedule we will transfer you to the airport. As your plane takes off from the runway in Kathmandu, your journey to Nepal comes to an end for this time — until you decide to visit again for some memorable and soul-searching trip in the Himalayas.
