Highlights
Description
The Mt. Kailash via Limi Valley Trek is an adventure and pilgrimage tour. Mt Kailash is often called the spiritual roof of the world and it is considered to be the most sacred mountain in the Himalayas, and the home of Shiva. From among the Earth’s 7 chakras, Mt Kailash is said to be the crown chakra – the most magnetic of all the chakras and connecting us to a higher power. It is a sacred mountain for Hindus and Buddhists alike and it is believed that if you walk around the mountain (“the Kora”) you will be relieved from all your sins.
Mt Kailash Limi Valley with Manasarovar yatra tour starts from Simikot in Humla district, North-West of Nepal and in the first few days leads along the Karnali River and then turns North towards Limi Valley, slowly climbing up to the desert-like Tibetan plateau landscapes. On the way to the Nepal-Tibet border crossing at Hilsa, we will cross a high pass, Nyalu-la (5005 metres). Along the route, a small side trip (1-hour walk in total) to a viewpoint is possible from where we get a view into Tibet and Mt. Kailash in the far distance. The Limi Valley area is one of Nepal’s remotest parts in the Northwest of the country close to the border with Tibet. It is extremely rich in wildlife and biodiversity, both flora and fauna – for example, wild yak, hyenas and red-crowned cranes can be found there.
Also, some very old Buddhist monasteries can be visited in Limi Valley. During the cultural revolution in China, some Buddhist religious items could be smuggled from Tibet and hidden in remote monasteries, to prevent them from being destroyed.
In Tibet, around the holy Manasarovar Lake, Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, some very old Buddhist monasteries can be found including caves where it is said that Milarepa stayed for meditation. The kora takes us around Mt. Kailash for about 2 ½ days and across the Dolma-la pass (5620 metres). Also along the Kailash Kora sacred places connected to Milarepa, like a mediation cave can be visited. We return to Nepal via an overland drive across the fascinating landscapes of the Tibetan plateau that may offer views of Tibetan gazelles or herds of kiang (the Tibetan wild ass) moving across the land. The Tibetan plateau and the Tibet-Nepal border area are also a habitat for the Tibetan argali, a type of wild mountain sheep and the Tibetan steppe polecat.
Himalayan Ecological Trekking has long-standing experience in organising Tibet and Mt. Kailash tours (since 1996), including via Limi Valley and the Nyalu pass. We are proud of this trip which is one of our favourites. Feel free to contact us to organise this tour for you.
