Detailed Itinerary of the Best of Mozambique Holiday Packages - 9 Days Tour from Johannesburg: DAY 1: Johannesburg - Maputo - Departing Johannesburg in the mid-morning on a domestic flight, you will arrive one hour later in Maputo. - Having cleared customs, the transfer service to your hotel will be waiting for you. - After checking in to your room at the luxurious Southern Sun, you will be collected in an air conditioned mini bus at 2pm for your guided afternoon city tour. You may have the luxury of the bus and guide all to yourself, or there may be additional travellers to enjoy the experience with you. Maputo, with its uniquely Latino-African flavour, is steeped in history and tradition. Stops include the Fortress, Central Market, Museum of Natural History, Railway Station and FEIMA curio market. You will also pass by the City Hall, Cathedral, the Botanical Gardens and Steel House. - At 5:00 PM you will return to your hotel. The evening is yours to enjoy at leisure. - Accommodation Southern Sun Maputo - Room. - Included activity: Three hour Maputo city tour. * Optionally, if you are already in Mozambique, we pick you up from Maputo Airport. DAY 2: Maputo - Barra Beach, Inhambane. - After a scrumptious breakfast you will be collected by your transfer service at 9:00 AM for the drive by air conditioned mini bus to Barra. Please note that there may be additional passengers on the mini bus with you. - Postcard-perfect Barra beach, with its azure sea and white sandy beaches, offers spectacular diving and arrangements can be made to dive here on days 4-6. - You will arrive in Barra at approximately 4:30 PM. A driver will be waiting to take you to your lodge. Here you will be checked in for a relaxing afternoon at leisure. - Tonight you will enjoy a delicious Mozambican Portuguese-style dinner. - Meals: Breakfast and Dinner. - Accommodation: Bayview Lodge / Neptune’s Lodge - Chalet. - Distance: 503 km. - Included activity: Traditional Mozambican Portuguese-style dinner. DAY 3: Barra Beach-Inhambane. - Today you will take a guided walk to a local reef where a rare sighting of seahorses will be possible. - Equipped with mask and snorkel, you will have ample time to explore and search for these unique and beautiful creatures. This activity takes place at low tide, in order to enable the walk to the reef. You will be advised the evening before of the departure time. - Accommodation: Bayview Lodge / Neptune’s Lodge - Chalet. Included activity: Walking tour to seahorse reef. DAY 4: Barra Beach-Inhambane. - Subject to availability, today would be a good day for an optional ocean safari with snorkelling, or a dive at one of Barra’s many exceptional dive sites. There may also be the chance to take a catamaran ride out to one of the many islands in the area. - Barra is home to one of the world’s largest whale shark populations - in the summer months sightings are more likely, and groups of up to 30 sharks are sometimes seen! The magnificent manta ray, and pods of playful dolphins are also on the list of possibilities. - Alternatively, you may wish to climb aboard a local taxi or “matatu” and head off to Tofo, to visit the craft market there. A range of colourful and interesting trinkets and crafts are on offer. - Accommodation: Bayview Lodge / Neptune’s Lodge - Chalet. - Optional activities: Diving, snorkelling, quad biking, horse riding, surfing, craft market visit, catamaran ride to islands. DAY 5: Barra Beach-Inhambane. - Another day to soak up the sun on the sunbeds on the beach, hang out the Neptune bar mingling with other travellers, or enjoying one of the many optional activities on offer in the area. - Accommodation: Bayview Lodge / Neptune’s Lodge - Chalet. - Optional activities: Diving, snorkelling, quad biking, horse riding, surfing, craft market visit, catamaran ride to islands. DAY 6: Barra Beach-Inhambane. - A final day for you to laze around soaking up the sun on the beautiful Barra beach, or to enjoy one of the many optional activities on offer. - Accommodation: Bayview Lodge / Neptune’s Lodge - Chalet. - Optional activities: Diving, snorkelling, quad biking, horse riding, surfing, craft market visit, catamaran ride to islands. DAY 7: Vilankulo. - Vilankulo is a coastal town in the Vilanculos district of Inhambane. The town is named after local tribal chief Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke, and some of the locals are named after his sons. From here you are ideally positioned to explore the Bazaruto Archipelago. Snorkelling the reef gives a glimpse into the richness of the Indian Ocean, and the spectacular sea life to be found here. - A private transfer service will take you from Barra to Vilanculos. After settling in you will be free to enjoy an optional township tour or simply enjoy the beach. You will also receive information about the Bazaruto island hopping dhow excursion taking place tomorrow. - All meals will be cooked by the lodge for you for the duration of your stay. - Meals: Lunch and Dinner. - Accommodation: Sailaway Chalets - Tented chalet. - Distance: 320 km. DAY 8: Vilankulo. - Today is yours to enjoy at leisure. Meals will be provided, so all you need do is relax and soak up the sun. - Bazaruto Excursion. Bazaruto Island falls within the Bazaruto National Park, one of largest marine parks in Southern Africa and an absolute wealth of sea life. Clear, turquoise waters make for clear views of the brightly coloured fish that frequent the reefs. There are five main islands in the archipelago and we will visit one of them on the full day dhow ride. Snorkelling will be done on one of the beautiful reefs, and the boat crew will cook a lovely local lunch for you. - Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. - Accommodation Sailaway Chalets - Tented chalet. - Included activity: Bazaruto Archipelago day tour on a dhow. DAY 9: Flight back to Johannesburg. - After a leisurely breakfast you will be transferred to Vilanculos Airport for your flight to Johannesburg, departing in the early afternoon. - The flight will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
