Latvia's Switzerland Sigulda town and Gauja National Park

Sigulda is on a picturesque stretch of the primeval Gauja river valley. Because of the reddish Devonian sandstone which forms steep rocks and caves on both banks of the river, buildings built in Alpine style, Sigulda has been called the "Switzerland of Latvia".

Sigulda Castle ruins have major historical and cultural significance, too. The castle was built in 1207 by the Sword Brothers’ Order.

The historical center of Turaida is particularly attractive with its green areas, ponds, paths and routes along the picturesque banks of the Gauja River. In the 11th-13th centuries the banks of the Gauja were populated by the Livs, an etnos with an ancient and unique culture. The evidence of the Liv culture can be found in several places in Turaida. The mighty medieval Turaida castle, an outstanding monument of archaeology, architecture and history is an important element in Latvia’ s cultural and historical heritage as it has witnessed major military conflicts in the area from the 13th to the 18th century. The Gutmanis Cave lies halfway between Sigulda Castle and Turaida Castle and has a small stream flowing from it. It is the largest cave in the Baltic's, measuring 19 m (62.34 ft) deep, 12 m (39.37 ft) wide and 10 m (32.81 ft) high. The cave still bears inscriptions from as early as the 18th century; drinking the water is supposed to be healthy and is said to increase one's lifespan. All this in one tour.
