Highlights
Description
Our Mount Kenya Trekking Tour leads you to the Mt. Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa while considered the highest in Kenya. The peak points of the mountain are Batian, Lenana, and Nelion. The mountain is in central Kenya, towards the south of the equator at a distance of 150 Km in north-northeast of Nairobi. This is a protected place in Mt. Kenya National Park. The park itself is listed on UNESCO World Heritage.
National Park is spanned over an area of 240 sq. Kilometer. Almost 15,000 people visit the park every year. The mountain inside the park basically remains of a dead volcano which erupted around 3.1 million years ago. Slopes of the mountain contain different biomes. Forests of Podocarpus and juniper are grown over the slopes. Bamboo trees are also found alongside the slopes having a height of around 25,00 m. While moving upward on the Mount Kenya Trekking Tour, you would see the trees of small length covered with moss and goat’s beard lichen. Giant rosette plants are also in the afro-alpine zone.
One can notice the small scattered glaciers among the complex of peaks. Batian and Nelion are the highest among them. The Mt. Kenya was first discovered by a missionary Johann Ludwig Krapf in 1849. As per historical records, the first summit of the Mt. Kenya was made by the Halford John Mackinder, Josef Brocherel and Cesar Ollier in 1899. The route to Batian is of Grade IV having around 20 pitches. The first summit of Nelson was made by the Shipton and Bill Tilman. You can reach Point Lenana via hiking trek. For those who are coming from abroad, it is to recommend that the best time to summit Mt. Kenya is in January or February from the southern side, while August or September from the Northern side.
