DAY 3: JAIPUR SIGHTSEEING
Jaipur, a city known for its vibrant culture, came into existence when Maharaja Jai Singh decided to relocate his capital from Amber due to the growing population's demands. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was a visionary ruler and an avid astronomer, and his desire for a new capital was driven by a dual purpose – to reflect his royal power and his scientific interests. The strategic selection of Jaipur's location offered better prospects for trade and defence compared to the previous capital, Amber. The city was meticulously designed according to Hindu town planning principles, featuring nine rectangular sectors known as chokris, symbolizing the nine divisions of the universe.
Originally named "Jai Singh Pura" in honour of its founder, it was later rechristened "Jaipur" to promote unity and harmony. To foster the city's growth, Jai Singh extended invitations to skilled artisans, craftsmen, and merchants from various regions of India to settle in Jaipur. This move sparked a flourishing arts and crafts industry, with specialized craftsmen excelling in activities like gem cutting, jewellery making, block printing, and miniature painting. Today, Jaipur is renowned as a shopper's paradise.
Your morning excursion includes a visit to the Amber Fort, a magnificent exemplar of Rajput architecture, perched dominantly atop a hill and once the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. En route, you'll pause for a photo opportunity at Hawa Mahal. Later, explore the City Palace, a complex of regal structures encompassing the Maharaja's private quarters. Its museum, housing a splendid collection of carpets and miniatures, is truly unique. Adjacent to the palace, you'll find the Astronomical Observatory of Jai Singh, a seventeenth-century marvel in astronomical science. This observatory boasts sophisticated tools for eclipse calculations and star position determination, including the ascendant. The highlight of the observatory is the towering 27-meter-high sundial, centrally positioned, capable of time calculations with a precision of up to 2 seconds. Take some time to explore local handicrafts, with Jaipur renowned for its textiles and gemstones. Return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
