Itinerary
Day 1:
Upon arriving in Accra, Ghana, settle into your hotel. Begin the day with a visit to the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum, a tribute to the celebrated black historian, writer, and activist who spent his final years in Ghana. Next, explore the Independence Square, where Ghana's inaugural president, Kwame Nkrumah, proclaimed the nation's liberation from colonial rule. Wander through the historic Jamestown community, one of Accra's oldest districts and a pivotal site in the slave trade era, where you'll encounter the iconic James Fort and Ussher Fort, once used as holding facilities for enslaved individuals before their journey to the Americas. Conclude your day with a delectable Ghanaian meal accompanied by traditional music in the evening.
Day 2:
Start the day with a visit to Cape Coast, about a three-hour drive from Accra, and tour the Cape Coast Castle, a former slave-holding facility and the headquarters of the British Gold Coast. After a guided tour of the castle, head to the Cape Coast Castle Museum, which tells the harrowing story of the transatlantic slave trade from the African perspective. Visit the nearby Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and another significant slave trading post. Take a boat ride on the nearby Benya Lagoon and learn about the history of the local fishing communities. Return to Accra in the evening.
Day 3:
Head to the Akwamu Kingdom, located about 50 miles from Accra, to learn about the history of one of the most powerful pre-colonial empires in West Africa. Visit the Okuapemhene's Palace Museum in Akropong, which houses a collection of historical artifacts and cultural relics of the Akwamu people. After the museum visit, take a guided tour of the Aburi Botanical Gardens, a serene oasis of natural beauty and a popular picnic spot for locals and tourists alike. Enjoy a traditional Ghanaian lunch before returning to Accra. This three-day itinerary offers a glimpse into Ghana's rich black history, highlighting the legacy of slavery, the struggle for independence, and the achievements of black heroes like W.E.B. Du Bois and Kwame Nkrumah
