Description

Bonn: Former Government District - Private Tour

Who is this tour for?

This tour is for those who want an overview of the government district and to learn about its historical background during Bonn's time as the capital.

What this is it about:

How did the "Bonn Republic" come to be?

Everyone knows Bonn was once the capital. But how did this come to pass? Why this small, tranquil city on the Rhine and not the bustling metropolis of Berlin?

The Basic Law is born in Bonn:

After the end of World War II, Germany’s cities lay in ruins. In Bonn, which fared relatively well by comparison, careful steps were taken to breathe new life into the ideologically and structurally devastated country with a modern constitution and freely elected representatives.

Bonn becomes the seat of government:

Bonn was not only the birthplace of the constitution for post-war Germany but also the place where the provisional seat of government was established. This marked the beginning of the "Bonn Republic."

Where will we go?

We will start at the Museum Koenig, walk along Adenauerallee, turn at the Federal Press Office, and then walk toward the modern United Nations Square. The tour will conclude at the Bundesbüdchen.

What else will we see?

From a distance, we’ll see the Villa Hammerschmidt, Palais Schaumburg, the former Federal Chancellery, the Haus der Geschichte, and Bonn’s iconic skyscrapers, including the Langer Eugen and the Post Tower.

Will we enter any buildings?

Only the Museum Koenig! Typically, we can briefly peek into its foyer and the Light Hall.

No others! We will not enter any other buildings during this tour.

Conclusion

By the end of this tour, you’ll have walked through the heart of the former "Bonn Republic," gained a basic understanding of its historical origins and developments, and identified its architectural highlights. The tour concludes on a fun note at the Bundesbüdchen.
