3 Days Danakil Depression Tour
Day 1, Semera - Afdera - Erta Ale
At 8:00 AM, our guide and driver will pick you up from Semera Airport and drive you to the Erta Ale Base Camp. Along the way, we will take a lunch break in the town of Afdera, known for its proximity to the Salt Lake where you can swim and float. Afterward, we will continue with a relaxed and leisurely drive to the ErtaAle base camp. Overnight camping will be near ErtaAle volcano.
Day 2, Erta Ale - Lake Asale
Starting at 8:30 AM, you will depart from the base camp in ErtaAle. By 4:00 PM, you will arrive in Hamedela. From there, you will proceed to Lake Asale salt flats to enjoy a breathtaking sunset and observe splendid camel caravans transporting salt from lake Asale. Overnight camping will be in Hamedela.
Day 3, Dallol - Semera
On this day, you will visit the colorful Dallol mountain, observe camel caravans, explore the Lake Asale salt flats, witness traditional salt excavating methods, see sulfuric acid ponds, and have the opportunity to swim in the Salt Lake. Finally, we will drive back to Semera arriving at the airport at 4pm. This concludes the tour.

Day 1: Semera – Afdera – Erta Ale
- 8:00 AM: Arrival at Semera Airport. Meet your guide and driver.
- Drive to Afdera: Travel through the Danakil Depression, offering your first views of this unique landscape.
- Midday (Lunch in Afdera): Stop for lunch in Afdera, near the Salt Lake. You can swim and float in the salty waters.
- Afternoon (Drive to Erta Ale Base Camp): Continue your journey towards the Erta Ale Base Camp, enjoying the desert views.
- Evening (Overnight at Erta Ale Base Camp): Arrive at the base camp near Erta Ale. Set up camp and enjoy a simple dinner. Prepare for the night trek to the volcano.
Day 2: Erta Ale – Lake Asale
- 8:30 AM: Depart from Erta Ale Base Camp. Begin the driving to Lake Asale.
- Late Afternoon (Arrive in Hamedela): Reach Hamedela, a small settlement. Continue to the Lake Asale salt flats.
- Sunset at Lake Asale: Watch the breathtaking sunset over the salt flats and see camel caravans transporting salt.
- Evening (Overnight Camping in Hamedela): Return to Hamedela for camping under the desert sky.
Day 3: Dallol – Semera
- Morning (Visit Dallol): Early morning visit to Dallol Volcano. See colorful acidic pools and sulfuric landscapes.
- Explore Salt Mining: Witness traditional salt mining methods used by the Afar people.
- Lake Asale Salt Flats: Return to Lake Asale to explore the salt flats and, if conditions allow, swim in the Salt Lake.
- Afternoon (Drive back to Semera): Begin the drive back to Semera. Arrive at the airport by 4:00 PM to conclude the tour.
