Highlights
Description
Mostar is located on the Neretva River and is the fifth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mostar was named after the bridge guards (mostari) who guarded the Old Bridge over the Neretva in the Middle Ages. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of the most visited sights in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is considered the epitome of Islamic architecture in the Balkans. The stone bridge, Stari most (Old Bridge), was built in 1566 by order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and quickly became a wonder in its time. The famous Turkish travel writer Evlija Celebija visited the city in the 17th century and wrote that the bridge is like a rainbow that rises to the sky and stretches from one side of the cliff to the other..
