Overview
The Makgadikgadi Pans are quite unlike anywhere else in Botswana and make a fascinating counterpoint to time spent in the Okavango Delta of Chobe. The combination of unique landscapes and wildlife, plus the opportunity to witness huge herds on the move, makes the Pans a unique destination.
Highlights
Description
There are number of ways to experience the Makgadikgadi Pans, from game drives to guided walking safaris. Unique experiences include sleeping out on the Pans, under the stars, and visiting meerkat colonies. Birders and artists alike will find much to delight them, whether ticking off migrating species or recreating the paintings of Thomas Baines. When the summer rains transform the Pans into lush grasslands, they attract large herds of herbivores (especially zebra, wildebeest and also itinerant elephant). When the Pans temporarily fill with water, they also attract huge numbers of migrating birds, with lesser flamingos being the most obvious and photogenic examples.
The title of local rock stars undoubtedly belongs to the meerkats – some colonies have become habituated to humans, which means that you can spend time watching them go about their daily routine of sunbathing, grooming and ganging up on snakes and scorpions.
The largest living things in the Pans by far are the massive, ancient baobab trees. In this flat landscape, the most famous of these were landmarks used by explorers like David Livingstone to find their way. Baines’ Baobabs, a cluster of seven of these trees (actually giant succulents, if we’re being pedantic) stand in Kudiakam Pan while the most iconic of them all, Chapman’s Baobab, lived for an estimated 1 000 years before falling in 2016. (As no-one was there when this happened, it’s not known if it made a noise).
What's included
Itinerary
You will be picked up from a hotel or lodge by a Marvelous Mobile Safari guide who will do a trip briefing before departing to Makgadikgadi Game Reserve. You will drive along the A3 road which interconnects Maun and Khumaga. Upon arrival at the entrance gate, clients will have a chance to do a game drive along Boteti River where they will see lots of Zebras.
Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is one of the largest flat salt pans in the world. During the wet season (November to March), wildlife viewing is excellent, particularly when large herds of zebra and wildebeest begin their westward migration to the Boteti region. Whilst Botswana is a world-renowned safari destination, the wildebeest and zebra migration here is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Species include gemsbok, eland and red hartebeest, as well as kudu, lions, cheetah, leopard, duiker, giraffe, springbok, steenbok, and even elephant, with all the accompanying predators, as well as the rare brown hyena.
The Makgadikgadi will provide opportunities to focus on semi-desert species such as elusive brown hyena, bat-eared fox or meerkats. You will spend a session with meerkats, following them on their activities. During the game drive, you will be able to track the black maned lion of the Kalahari. The black maned lion of the Kalahari has a dominant color, its adaptation is very high and therefore it can survive in harsh conditions.African wild dogs, cheetahs, brown hyenas can also be found following their prey in this unmated wilderness.
Packed breakfast and lunch will be served. After a game drive in the park, you will be transferred back to Maun and dropped off at your place of accommodation.
