Highlights
Description
Khama Rhino Sanctuary- This Botswana safari sanctuary also boasts of the Serowe Pan, a depression found at the centre of the sanctuary and terrain that is dotted with smaller pans of water across the area. The sanctuary grew from 14 white rhinos and 2 black rhinos into a total of 34 rhinos due to birthing and translocation of some into the sanctuary. It is home to over 200 bird species, making it perfect for avid bird watcher. Blue wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest eland, giraffe and zebra are also inhabitants of this beautiful natural habitat. Steenbok, kudu, duiker, porcupine, lynx, bat-eared fox and wild cats are sighted in the reserve. The sanctuary makes a perfect African safari haven close to Serowe with its various activities. The sanctuary offers a Khama Rhino safari trails that are best for nature walks assisted by an experienced and knowledgeable ranger coupled with game drives within the sanctuary. A visit to this Africa Safari wilderness would immensely help in the sustainability of the sanctuary and rhinos in Africa.
Lekhubu Island, in the Makgadikgadi Pans, is one of the uniquely beautiful features of the pans. This granite outcrop, growing up from the surrounding flat salt pans as one approaches it, is about three stories high and a kilometre long. It is situated in the southwest of Sowa Pan. It is a crescent-shaped island with terraced slopes and fossil beaches of wave-rounded pebbles, indicating the prehistoric lake’s erstwhile water levels. Decorated with a display of ancient, gnarled baobabs on top and surrounded on three sides by a seemingly endless stretch of salt pan, Khubu Island looks like the birthday cake of a wild giant witch. This giant’s fruit cake is decorated by massive Baobab trees, each with its own unique shape and form. Each depicting the kind of surreal shapes that gives one the feeling that this island is somehow haunted. That there are all kinds of invisible spirits wandering around the place. This feeling has been recognised by the locals who attach a kind of spiritual sacredness to the place and there is a small cave where visitors can leave offerings to the spirits on the eastern side of the island. Lekhubu, the original desert island, lies near the south-western corner of Sowa Pan. The island, an ancient 20-metre high scrap of rock, is one tenuous finger of grass with its ghostly Baobabs surrounded by a sea of salt. It is said that in cool weather, this bizarre sight can make you feel like castaways on an alien planet.
Central Kalahari Game Reserve- Especially during the summer, the large herds attract the attention of predators. The CKGR is one of the best places in Botswana to see cheetah: the large, flat open areas are ideally suited to their hunting style. Perhaps the most iconic species is the lion – but these are not just any lion. The black-maned lion of the Kalahari are renowned for their size and their magnificent honey-coloured manes, shot through with black. On the largest specimens, this can extend almost to the belly, making them look even more impressive. Other key species include giraffe, ostrich, and wild dog. Just as interesting are the smaller predators and the many species that have adapted to these arid conditions. Some of our favourites include brown hyaena, honey badger, bat-eared fox and aardwolf. Meerkat are always entertaining, and there’s even a chance that you could see one of the real stars of the show: an aardvark or pangolin. Look out too for dry-country birds including the giant Kori bustard – one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.

About 10 000 years ago the Lake Makgadikgadi dried up and Lekhubu was left, an island surrounded by miles and miles of white salt. Research indicates that climatic changes and earth movements over thousands and thousands of years caused this dramatic change to take place. Low rock walls on the southern side of Lekhubu Island date back to the great Zimbabwean empire.
Packed lunch will be served along the way. Upon arrival, clients will be taken for a game drive and later return to camp for a shower and dinner before heading to bed.
DAY 4:

DAY 5:
Early morning after breakfast, you will depart for Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Central Kalahari Game Reserve encompasses 52 000 square kilometers. The region of vast open plains, salt pans and ancient riverbeds is home to large herds of springbok, gemsbok. Made famous by Mark and Delia Owen in the book Cry of the Kalahari, we will spend 2 nights at Deception Valley and accommodation is tented camping. During our stay here we will track the black manned lion of the Kalahari. African wild dogs, cheetahs, brown hyenas can also be found following their prey in this untamed wilderness. The black manned lion of the Kalahari has a dominant color its adaptation is very high and therefore it can survive in hash conditions.
The reserve has a variety of geological formations formed by changing climate over thousands of years. The Okwa River, now dry once fed the lake Makgadikgadi. Today this ancient fossil river forms a huge and beautiful valley in the southern part of the reserve, the open grasslands that spring of life with the coming of the rains support abundant game.
Deception Valley is the reserve’s most famous location. This is a long, broad inter-dune valley running roughly north–south; it's thought to be the bed of a fossil river. During and after good rains this is carpeted in luscious green grass that attracts dense concentrations of game. There will be an afternoon game drive and dinner will be served at the campsite prepared by the chef. Time for bed will be determined by the client.
DAY 6:
Wake up at around 06:00am for a light breakfast and a game drive through areas we did not get the chance to cover during the previous day.
