West Lake in Hanoi is listed among the biggest freshwater lakes present in Vietnam. It is located in the northwest of Hanoi. Having surrounded by gardens, villas, and hotels, this is one of the most popular places for recreation and attracts a number of local as well as foreign tourists around the year. The length of West Lake in Hanoi is around 17 Km and it spans over 5 Km2 of area. A Thanh Nien Road has delimited a small portion of the lake to form the Truc Bach Lake.
The importance of the West Lake in Hanoi can be gauged from this that one district of Hanoi is named after the lake call Tay Ho District. The lake was basically created from the red river’s curved part. It has already appeared in many Vietnamese legends. According to some records, the lake was actually designed during the fight between Fox spirit and Lac Long Quan. Therefore, sometimes in the past this lake was also called Fox Corpse Swamp. Some legends say that the real name of the lake was Golden Buffalo Lake or Han Viet as the lake came into being by the efforts of a buffalo after she lost her calf. It was called Foggy Lake back in the 11th century due to such conditions over here. However, it was renamed the West Lake in 1573 and it is still in use.
West Lake in Hanoi has huge historical importance for the city. The oldest pagoda, called Tran Quoc Pagoda, was constructed in the 6th century A.D in the middle of this lake by the Ly Nam De. Quan Thanh is the fourth most sacred temple of Hanoi. The oldest school of Hanoi named Chu Van An High School is also nearby this lake.
Being one of the biggest lakes of Hanoi, it is surrounded by restaurants, gardens, hotels and entertainment centers. Due to this real estate sector has started flourishing. Prices of land near the lake are increasing manifold. The quarters near to the West Lake in Hanoi are full of expatriates and rich Vietnamese people.
