Vung Vieng Fishing Village is the most authentic and ecological friendly locality among the four villages that lie in Halong Bay. It has earned this reputation owing to the beautiful natural scenery and unique history as well as cultural traits. Since the Halong Bay has attracted a variety of tourists from across the world in the recent past, this village has gained the most from this.
Despite the introduction of modern ways of living standards, the innate culture over the Vung Vieng Fishing Village is still preserved. It is considered in the center of Bai Tu Long Bay. Even though Bay Tu Long Bay is thinly populated than comparative to its other neighboring localities, yet it has the impressive scenery.
Vung Vieng village actually came into existence in the 19th century by the efforts of local fishermen. It was the central place where they were supposed to exchange their goods. Till the recent past, there were only 50 families residing in the village, totaling 300 residents. These families are residing here for many generations and have adopted a very modest way of living. Previously, their only source of income was fishing but now tourism has added another avenue in their source of livelihood. It is quite possible that in the past these families have never imagined being a major attraction for tourists but now their small houses in the Halong Bay are itself a source of earning for them.
Management of Halong Bay board decided in 2012 that the residents of the Vung Vieng Fishing Village should be relocated to somewhere else in the wake of increasing tourism which caused upset among the locals as they are not immune to leave this place. However, the board had persistently asked them to move to another place where their future generations will have better living standards and education system. There might be a thought in your mind that despite so remote, what survived this village for so long. But it was the caring attitude and community interaction among the locals which made all this possible.
A central place in the Vung Vieng Fishing Village was decided for a meeting and to exchange the goods which greatly benefited all of them. The residents of this village who are here since many generations did not feel any strange thing about the onrush of tourists. Instead, these people welcomed everyone with an open heart.
The visitors normally came to have a fresh look at the old living ways of the locals. Even though a lot has been varied but still villagers have maintained most of the primitive style cultural values. The tourists might stay overnight in this village and could have the opportunity to do some fishing under the supervision of experts. In short, Vung Vieng Fishing Village is a must-visit place and should be traveled over once in a lifetime.
