Volcano San Antonio is located on La Palma, one of the Canary Islands, namely in the south of the territory called Cumbre Vieja in the municipality of Fuencaliente. Cumbre Vieja is an inactive volcano ridge which is interesting because of having a few volcano calderas, and San Antonio's one is the part of it.
Along with volcano San Antonio, there is another popular crater of Teneguia. Teneguia volcano is particularly famous for having erupted quite recently, in 1971, whereas San Antonio has been dormant for approximately 400 years. Its last explosion took place in 1678 and lasted for three months. Continuous eruptions were accompanied by sulfurous gases and earthquakes, so, one of the hot springs gave the surrounding area the name of Fuencaliente. It quite literally means "hot spring" in Spanish.
Now, however, volcano San Antonio is calm and its crater is very finely conserved. Visitors can walk the steep path up there to have a look into the circular caldera. You can easily go round its rim or even manage to do it in push-chair. Also, apart from seeing the sleeping mouth of an ancient volcano, you can witness wonderful views of Teneguia volcano, Atlantic ocean, lighthouses, and a fishing buy, nestling in the corner of the island. Tourists can even notice that once burnt ground around the volcano now is gradually conquered by endemic plants! In the daytime, volcano San Antonio provides beautiful views of territories around it, but at night it is also the perfect place to observe stars!
Here, the viewpoint Mirador Astronomico is situated at an altitude of 633 meters. That's why researchers often use this place to watch the process of the sun setting, rising and making seasons change. Proof of it is a perfect spot for astronomical observations is that here the locations of such important constellations as Great Bear and Cassiopeia can be detected. The viewpoint happens to be close to the Visitor Center where they have quite a good exhibition, cafe, and a shop. In addition, here people can share with you more information not only about volcano San Antonio volcano but also the volcanic of this territory in La Palma island since it is the youngest part of it!
So, do yourself a favor and visit volcano San Antonio to see the lunar landscapes, fantastic ocean views and stay till night to feel closer to the stars!
