Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is a museum of distinctive character housing variety of historical, ethnic and cultural things in Hanoi, Vietnam. The museum actually showcasing the characteristics of around 54 different ethnic groups in Vietnam. The overall area of the museum is 10.823 acre in the District Giay Cau.
Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is at an approximate distance of eight kilometers from the center of the city. As it is the member of Vietnam academy of social sciences thus it depicts that the museum has some important things and position in the academic institutions of the Government of Vietnam. This place was considered to be built in the late ’80s by the Vietnamese government to protect the various cultural and ethnic aspects of Vietnam. Official approval for construction of Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was made in December 1987. Construction of it was completed in around eight years from 1987 to 1995. However, the public was formally allowed to visit the museum from November 1997. The overall budget for construction and artifacts installed inside was around 3 million USD. The building being used for the exhibition was engineered and devised by the Ha Duc Linh. He was a formal member of the Tay ethnic group. Design of building is in shape of Dong Son drum. However, the internal design was proposed and prepared by a well known French architect Veronquie Dollfus.
Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is fully packed with information related to traditional Vietnamese ways of living, from small rituals to religious events. Vietnam is represented as a melting pot of Vietnamese culture. Displays outside the museum are alike homes of Vietnamese, with great attention paid to architectural styles. Some leisure pursuits can also be found on display, which includes calligraphy and puppet theatre.
The main aim of building the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was to preserve and present the civilizations and cultural practices of southeast Asia. 15,000 artifacts are placed inside the museum which includes photographs and other things like audio tapes etc. The indoor exhibition has Tho, Tav, Ka Dai, Ngai, Nam-Dao, Khmer and Muong. Some other antiquities on display are knives, pipes, and baskets. Other things related to weddings, spiritual rituals and funeral ceremonies are also exhibited, offering an unparalleled glimpse of heritage, history, and culture of Vietnam.
One of the most prominent and major features of the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is that artifacts are stacked in a uniform and simple manner so that everyone could enjoy the purity of this place without getting into complex details.
