Tindaya Mountain is a mountain of volcanic origin, situated on the island of Fuerteventura which belongs to the Canary archipelago off the African coast. The mountain is also known under various names as Montaña de Tindaya, Montaña Sagrada (the Sacred Mountain) and Montaña de las Brujas (the Witches' Mountain).
It is one of the most important and iconic landmarks of Fuerteventura due to the religious context, legends, and exceptional geomorphological significance. Thus, no wonder it gained the status of the Natural Monument and is protected as an Ecological Sensitivity Area since 1987. The official name of the mountain is received from the same title of the village which is found at its feet.
Overlooked by the mountain, it is a typical lovely island farmer village with its own chapel and a variety of domestic animals. However, the Tinadaya volcano is far from being typical! Having a total altitude of 401 meters, it is made of trachyte (traquita), the valuable volcanic rock which was previously extracted and used for the decorative purposes for the Fuerteventura airport. However, since the protection status, this practice is prohibited. Tindaya looks very different from other volcanoes with its triangular shape which almost the same from every angle.
Also, there are a lot of unique traces of the past found on the slopes of the mountain, such as over 200 engravings of various shapes in the rock of Tindaya. Among them, more than 100 carvings are those of human feet (also called petroglyphs polymorphs). Other motifs of the traces include geometric figures or ovoid shapes. According to different versions, these carvings, first found in 1978, were made to scare the evil spirits, while others believe they indicate that aboriginal peoples used Tindaya as a place for their funeral structures, as well as for human sacrifices at the top. Nevertheless, it's still a splendid place with rare endemic flora, calm and special atmosphere, as well as a good viewpoint.
On clear days, you can see other mountain peaks - Betancuria massif, Mount Teide on Tenerife island and Pico de la Nieves on Gran Canaria!
Tindaya Mountain even has its notorious story about the controversial project by the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida, who wanted to hollow out the mountain and create the gigantic cube inside. According to him, it was to be the place of tolerance, where everybody can feel the connection with nature and each other regardless of race and nationality. However, the project was met with objections from ecologists and although heated debates are circling the idea, it is still unclear if it will eventually be implemented or not.
Still, now you have the chance to see the Tindaya mountain with your own eyes and even go hiking there, witnessing the beautiful scenery and unique engravings on its slopes!
