Timanfaya National Park, also known as Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, is a unique park which serves unbelievable views and protected territory of purely geological nature. It is located on Lanzarote, one of the Canary islands, and covers areas of two municipalities, Tinajo and Yaiza.
Timanfaya is essentially 51,07 square kilometres of fully volcanic soil, turning it into the spectacular view, identical to the ones you'd rather see in sci-fi movies about extraterrestrial life. Moreover, these territories have been included to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. The splendid landscape is the result of terrifying and grandiose eruptions which occured between 1730 and 1736, as well as later in 1824. The explosions led to the destruction of villages and endemic flora and fauna, which ended in the majority of population migrating from the island. However, soon enough locals found the new way of cultivating the arid grounds by making gerias.
The National Park terrains strike the tourists with the richness and variety in colours of the magma - reddish, yellow, brownish, black shades blending together and creating whimsical otherworldly landscape of Fire Mountains to marvel at. Flora is somewhat scarce, since the slopes of hills are occupied mainly by lichens.
Timanfaya National Park also features a remarkable architectural trace of Cesar Manrique, the native architect, who engaged into designs of many tourist attractions across Lanzarote. His famous projects include The Cactus Garden and Jameos del Agua. Manrique's main goal was to combine the nartural and artificial in perfect synthesis, which shows in his options for materials and design solutions.
Timanfaya, as other places, has its own symbol at the entrance - the devil, which is a referance to one of the local folklore legends. Furthermore, on the highest mountain of Montañas de Fuego called Islote de Hilario, you can find El Diablo restaurant that offers the overview of brethtaking panorama underneath. Inside, the barbecue is made over the pit which uses natural volcanic heat of the earth. In contrast, outside of the restaurant there are holes in the ground, where you can be demonstrated few impressive geothermal effects. First, the dry plant or a straw is put there only to be ignited from the volcanic temperature only. Then, the water is poured down the whole which comes right back in form of a steam geyser, which can spring up at the heigh of 30 metres!
As for sighseeing and exploration, tourists are not allowed to do it on their own - you will have to opt either for bus tour or walking tour with a guide. Not only that, you can also choose to ride a camel, since its another variant available in this park. If you are interested in scientific information, head for the Visitor's Centre first. There, you will be exposed to the overview and geological history of the park area, description of the endemic flora, consequences of the eruptions, as well as the ability to experience how the siad eruption might feel like! If all of that has already fueled your interest, then do not wait and head for the unique lunar scenery of Timanfaya National Park, a must-see of Lanzarote island!
