Thukla is a famous place as a memorial viewpoint. All those hikers who have lost their lives to summit Mt. Everest including a legendary climber Babuchiri Sherpa have memorials in Thukla. These were actually built with cement and stones mostly by the families of deceased as well as the well-wishers of climbers. The locals suggest that these constructs are not environment-friendly. Beautiful prayers are written on the memorials.
Around 100 small and big memorials were built at different times. Thukla is also called Gughla, actually located at the endpoint of Khumbu Glacier, and normally majority stays here for lunch on their way to hiking. You can stay for a little longer also as the accommodation is available in some good small restaurants.
As you will travel up from this point, the realization about the fragility of life would start becoming clear to you. Imaginations that how these hikers died on their way to hiking would remind that you must prepare for the tough times ahead.
