Temple of Literature cannot be treated as a religious and sort of sacred place. In fact, it is where you can study, comfortably. Total courtyards in the temple are five. One is home to a large pond, second is called the courtyard of sage and it houses a statue of Confucius, the third courtyard is Thai Hoc where stands a bell tower and large drum. The other two are brimming with colorful landscapes. This is one of the most important cultural places in Hanoi and has deep roots in Vietnamese history.
Hanoi has a very rich history and tales are too many which are famous among the seasonal travelers. To read the history and other constructive material about Hanoi, none could be a better place than the Temple of Literature. The overall layout and ideology behind building this temple is based on the birth of Confucius, having magnificent bath and entrance. It was sometimes in the past was reserved for the king, running through the center.
The gardens of the Temple of Literature are rich in old trees and considered unique as well special place for students to relax and enjoy. The temple signifies the start of a uniform education system in Vietnam and it also honors the most revered scholars and writers of Hanoi. Historical evidence suggests that it was in 1076 when students begin enrolling at the imperial academy. The curriculum was largely influenced by Chinese literature and their ways of living. Classical Chinese poetry and history were taught in here. Four tests were conducted annually of the students enrolled in it. Everyone who so ever attended this academy feels honored as it was the most respectable academy in Vietnam.
Some of the most brilliant and talented minds were graduated from the Temple of Literature. The academy was run on this pattern until 1779. However, in 1906 it started operating alike district school. Even though there have been many wars and conflicts, but this building remained intact in the past 1000 years.
Some other interesting things to see are stone statues and writing inscribed throughout the temple. It houses many original features of the landmark academia in Vietnam. The Temple of Literature is easily accessible and it is at a walking distance from the Ba Dinh Square. It is nearby Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and the presidential palace. In short, the Temple of Literature is one of the most beautiful attractions in Vietnam to be visited by the locals as well as foreigners as it introduces you with the academic history of Vietnam.
