Sung Sot Cave is counted among the most beautiful and largest caves in Halong Bay. It is located at such a distinctive place where the many Rocky Mountains are interacting with each other in quite strange shapes which are hard to find somewhere else. By some accounts, it is a natural wonder in Vietnam and may be due to that reason it is acknowledged by UNESCO as the natural world heritage.
Beautiful geological formations at this place came into being around 500 million years ago. Weathering, erosion, geological phenomenon and geomorphology has made this land quite diverse. Mesmerizing landscapes, islands, majestic caves and green forests formed here. Karst revolution some 20 million years ago made the all formation picturesque and gave birth to this cave in Halong Bay. Presently, these caves attract a significant number of tourists nationally and internationally.
In addition to Dau Go Cave and Thien Cung Cave, Sung Sot Cave has also earned its name in most attractive and well-preserved caves in Halong. While entering the cave for the very first time, tourists might feel that the cave is spanned over a small area but as they will move through the slot and go inside, they will be amazed to see the large area of the cave. When the French visited this cave in the past, they were surprised at the wide area of the cave and even named it the cave of surprising things. Since that time, it is called Sung Sot Cave.
The road towards Sung Sot Cave is covered with a canopy of leaves. While walking under the stone steps, tourists might have the urge to climb mountains. The cave has mainly two areas. First is like a theatre and the second one is enveloped by the stalagmites and stalactites. It is more alike velvet carpet. Both areas have their own specialties. It is famous about the cave that you would enter into an illusionary world once you will be in the cave.
Locals tell that in ancient times, Thanh Giong, a hero of Vietnamese history vanquished an aggressor and helped the locals to expel the demons from their neighborhood. After assisting the locals, he left his sword and horse at this place to assure people that demons will not come back. Thus, it is widely believed that most of the objects in Sung Sot Cave today are related to the battle fought between Thanh Giong & attackers. After summiting the highest point of the cave, tourists have a great chance to adore the landscapes which include a royal garden, some trees, birds and clear water lakes.
Sometimes, monkeys rush to this place to find foods and fruits which add excitement in the journey of many. The Sung Sot Cave is beautiful at its best and it was named in 10 most beautiful caves of the world by Association of tour Operators, Czech Republic. Therefore, a visit to the Sung Sot Cave must be paid if you are planning to explore Vietnam.
