Punta La Entallada Lighthouse, also known in Spanish as Faro de La Entallada is one of six lighthouses on the east coast of Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, near the village Las Playitas. The lighthouse is active nowadays and covers the area of the Atlantic coast between two other lighthouses - one of Puerto del Rosario and another of Morro del Jable. Due to the heavy traffic on the sea between the eastern coast and Moroccan one, Punta La Entallada plays an important role in reporting the maritime situation.
The Punta La Entallada Lighthouse was built over the period between 1953 and 1954, celebrating its official opening on the 3rd of December, 1954. The design of the building was undertaken by the architect Carlos Alcón, who introduced some Moorish influences to the project. The exterior of Punta La Entallada is its most fascinating feature due to the masterful contrast of its colors. The masonry with the inclusion of white mortar creates the striking opposition, which, moreover, is then deepened by the reddish stone and mortar used for corner, angles, window and door frames. The red stone originates from the central village of Tetir. The building is oriented towards Africa and is considered the closest to the African shore.
On the outer side, it has three towers, the central one being 11 m high and crowned with a lantern dome made completely from glass. The optical system of Punta La Entallada is set to give out three flashing signals per 18 seconds. On the inner side, there is a courtyard enclosed from three sides due to the U-shape of the construction with arched corridors. At the time, it was the last lighthouse built with the capacity of being inhabited. Today, it is not operated by people anymore but automated. The tourists visiting here are not allowed to see the interior, although there are plans to turn the insides into the museum! However, there is still a lot to see besides the interior, namely, the landscapes.
Punta La Entallada Lighthouse is erected on the cape of Fuerteventura at an altitude of approximately 200 m above the sea level. Because of that, it was also used not only for signaling ships but also aircraft. Apart from that, being on top of the promontory, you can witness the magnificent view of the Atlantic ocean and arid volcanic territories lying outside of the lighthouse. For that purpose, the separate viewpoint with 360-degree outlook was built nearby.
Moreover, Punta La Entallada is located on the terrains of Natural Park of Cuchillo de Vigán, which occupies more than 6,000 hectares of the protected areas, significant to scientists. Here you will see crystal clear ocean waters along with lunar-like grounds mottled with cuchillos - hills between valleys, formed by lava streams that once flew out the Vigán volcano. So, be sure to climb the steep road up to Punta La Entallada Lighthouse and see one of the iconic Spanish stamp images and the natural beauty surrounding it, with your own two eyes!
