Located in the north of Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz was among the first places to attract tourists from the business point of view in the late 18th century. This place can be accessed by TF-5 highway. Formerly, it was part of port La Orotava. Many historical sites such as Plaza de Charco, old custom houses, San Telmo promenade, La Ranilla-a fishing district, and swimming pools of Lago Martianez are some of the most prominent places to visit.
Some other sites of interests are Matianes Pools, Plaza del Charco, Loro Parque, Jardin Beach, Archeological Museum of Puerto de la Cruz, Botanical Garden and Castillo San Felipe - a small castle bordering with Playa Jardin. Due to these mentioned points, a large number of tourists came here and they have given an impetus to the hotel and restaurant business. Many people participate in Tenerife Airshow and El Carnaval also.
Experts interested in botany and climatology had frequently visited Puerto de La Cruz old town before mass tourism came here. Puerto de Cruz emerged as a main cultural center in the 19th century due to the interest of many researchers, writers, travelers, and peaceful climate lovers. Because of the above reasons, the town earned significance in the European elite and after the arrival of modern tourism, it has gained the advantage of its good reputation. Those visitors planning to explore the Canary Islands should not forget Puerto de La Cruz old town to include in the loop.
