Located at a distance of 1.4 km in the north of Auditorio de Tenerife, Plaza de España is touted as one of the largest squares of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Being one of the main squares in Tenerife, it attracts a large number of locals and foreign tourists annually. It could be the first stopover before you started exploring Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Square was built in 1929 and resently, few original walls of the previous buildings are on display in an underground tunnel below the square. An artificial lake built by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron and Monumento a Los Caidos is among the major tourist signs of the square. In addition to this, an underground gallery where remains of the castle are showed on displays. At the end of the Plaza de España, there's a sign of the tourist brand of the city which reads 'Santa Cruz'. The sign is illuminated in various beautiful colors on different events.
Plaza de España is encircled by the Palacio de la Carta, the Plaza de la Candelaria, and the Palacio de la Carta. The popularity of the square can be gauged from this fact that this appeared in Jason Bourne, 5th film of Bourne series, demonstrating the Syntagma Square of Athens.
