Pino Gordo and Pino de las Pernadas are the two tallest pine trees in the Canary Islands. When one starts climbing up from Vilaflor, the highest town in Spain at an altitude of 1400 m above the sea level, these trees come along the way. Information board along the main road in the direction of parking lot are also present. Trunk circumference of Pino Gordo is 9.36 m. According to some records, age of this tree is around 800 years. It is to be noted that Canary pine is a widespread specie on the Canary Island and is legally protected by the government. Property of pine to absorb the moisture from air and store in the soil makes it important for Islands. Due to the height of Pino Gordo, it has been declared a national monument. Pino Gordo and Pino de Las Pernadas are quite close and opposite to one another. In the world of botany, Pino Gordo is of great importance. Local and foreign tourists as well as the botanists come in great number annually.
