Actually abandoned and destroyed by time Pescante de Hermigua pier is the epitome of industrial architecture of the Island of La Gomera, built between 1907 & 1908 using stones, an arm of iron and mortar prisms. A steam engine was used for raising and lowering goods, animals, and persons from and to the trade ships.
Offices and warehouse were also built to manage the traffic of goods. A British company “Fyffes Limited” had the technology to build such places, so it built and it was doing its business of tomatoes and bananas exports. The main purpose of Pescante de Hermigua pier was to export fruits most likely tomatoes and banana as well as for passenger traffic. This is evidence of thriving agriculture. The building of Pescante de Hermigua reminds us of the construction of it which was made in two phases.
As the port of San Sebastian started its operation in 1950, activities were ceased at Pescante de Hermigua. It is an important historical site and speaks volumes about the trade history of La Gomera. It had played an indispensable part in the economic, social, demographic and industrial development of the Island.
