Masca Ravine is named among the oldest areas of Canary Islands as it has 7 million years of history. It is situated within the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, in the north most corner of the Island of Tenerife. Vertical walls around this Masca Gorge continue until it approaches sea level and makes the journey interesting. Even though the trek is short but the adventurous nature of the terrain and the inclination make it enticing walk.
Whenever you do plan to visit this place, do not forget to wear viable attire and take appropriate food with as you will hardly find any eating places along the trek. The incline of this 4 Kms trek is 580 meters and it starts from Masca Hamlet to reach a bridge wooden bridge. Here the path crosses the river bed and then it shifts to another side to sidestep the strong water flow which increases its intensity of flow in winter.
Just at the entry of river, an area of cliffs in Los Gigantes can be approached by boat. It is advised that do not make hiking on this trek during heavy rain and strong winds as there would hardly be any boat at the jetty to take you back. Tackling this trek is recommended in the dry season because the chances of rockfall would be less and the water streams would be laminar up to some extent. However, there is nothing much to worry about as the authorities have already made safety arrangements for the visitors.
Actually, the access to Masca Ravine is closed by the government, because of many accidents with careless hikers that enter to the Masca Ravine without a guide and without any knowledge about its dangerous conditions in the rainy or windy days.
