Makalu is the 5th highest mountain in the world, having the elevation of 8485, situated at a distance of 19 Km from Mahalnagur Himalayas in the south of Everest. The shape of Makalu is a 4-sided pyramid and attracts visitors due to its beauty. Two subsidiary peaks annexed to it Makalu II and Kangchungtse, in 3 Km north of the main summit.
Makalu was first climbed over by American team led by Riley Keegan. Members from Sierra Club and California Himalaya expedition were also part of the trekking team. However, their attempt to surpass the mountain remained unfruitful. Sir Edmund Hillary who surmounted the Mt. Everest has also tried to summit this peak but due to sickness and bad weather conditions could not attempt it successfully. But a French expedition in 1955 completed the summit first time from North face and Northeastern ridge.
It is worth mentioning that Makalu is the toughest trekking peak in the world, but it has its own distinction in the comity of mountains. The difficulty of summiting it is due to steep ridges and pitches. But once you will climb over this peak, surmounting Everest would become easier for you.
