Los Hervideros - hauntingly beautiful rocky cliffs situated on the southwestern coast of Lanzarote, one of the islands comprising the Canary archipelago. These 15-meter high cliffs are of volcanic origin, offering amazing combination of red, black, green and purple colors contrasting with clear blue Atlantic waters.
The cliffs occurred in Lanzarote because of the massive eruptions of Timanfaya volcanoes, occurring circa 1730-1736 and creating El Mar de Lava. Los Hervideros were formed because of magma flowing from Montana de la Vieja Gabriela. As the hot springs got in contact with cool ocean waves, they quickly solidified, creating basaltic rocks of whimsical shapes and corridors, through which lava would flow freely. Afterward, the erosion created holes in the rock, locally called bufaderos. They let the water spring out of them on very aggressive high tides.
Also, there can be found two caves, naturally shaped out of volcanic material and separated by the pillar, which in itself is an excellent viewpoint with a manmade balcony. The location is most definitely at its best and most dramatic during rough weather because it gives you the perfect idea of why the cliffs are called Los Hervideros. Literally translated as "the boiling pot" or "the bubbling place" in Spanish, it is really a sight to behold during storms. The water rushes in with mighty roars, crashing against the black of the basalt and turning into the white boiling foam. While it's flowing into the caves, the high jets burst up high out of countless holes left from erosion.
In front of such a view, it is ridiculously easy to feel insignificant and powerless as opposed to the force of nature. On calm and sunny days, however, tourists can explore the steep paths occurring in the rocks. Be sure to strictly follow the guidelines to stay safe and enjoy the otherworldly views. Drowning in sunlight, they look desolated and wild, which is probably the reason why some car commercial was shot there. In addition, it's a perfect place to watch the sunset with a minimum of people on site!
The omnipresent architect of Lanzarote César Manrique designed special walkways and viewpoints for tourists that look very seamless and natural. Several carparks are scattered across Los Hervideros which may serve as viewpoints as well. Nearby, there are other attractions to be found, for example, vast lunar grounds of Malpais or Badlands with Monte Bermeja or salt pans of Salinas de Janubio with acidic Green Lagoon.
So, if you like the idea of an intimidating boiling pot which is volcanic Los Hervideros, then head towards the southwest of Lanzarote and come face to face with nature!
