Lobos Island... Ever dreamt of finding yourself on the grounds barely touched by civilization somewhere amid the Atlantic ocean? Then Lobos Island is exactly what you're looking for! Alternatively called Isla de Lobos, it is a really small volcanic island of 4,679 square kilometers which belongs to the Canary archipelago.
Also, its territory lies close to Fuerteventura island from across La Bocayna strait and can be easily accessed by kayaking or by the means of ferries from the port of Corralejo town. Isla de Lobos has the status of naturals reserve, being home to Parque Natural del Islote de Lobos since 1982.
The name is literally translated from Spanish "the island of wolves", owing to it to the colony monk seals that once occupied the shores of the island. They are also often referred to as "sea lions" or "sea wolves" (Lobos Marinos). Now, however, these species are completely extinct and only the stone sculptures of them remind us of the origin of the name. However, another interpretation of the title is more romantic - due to the terrains being almost desolated, just like a lone wolf. Here hides the breathtaking natural beauty of white sand beaches and somewhat lunar landscapes.
The highest peak of Lobos Island is the volcano La Caldera, 127 meters high. These days it isn't active but if you get up there, you will have a wonderful view of the whole island and Fuerteventura, dunes and beaches, as well as the Martiño Lighthouse. All over the landscape hornitos are scattered, looking like small tar-black mounds or hills. These are the formations caused by the meeting of lava and water. As for the beaches, one of the most spectacular ones is definitely La Concha beach ('The Shell'). The waters are transparent and crystalline, so it's a perfect place for relaxation and sunbathing.
If you happen to be hungry, then head for the only restaurant on this island, Antoñito el Farero, which will surprise you with its impressive range of fresh seafood. The last but not the least thing to see here is a postcard-like fishermen village El Puertito. It is situated near the restaurant and is also a very quiet area with occasional tourists and fishermen doing their thing.
To sum up, if you're into secluded places with rich nature, beautiful views and a quiet atmosphere, then Lobos Island is where you should be right now!
