La Orotava old town is, among the oldest towns which were founded in the Canary Islands, situated in the north of Tenerife Island. It was built in the 16th century after the Spanish conquered this place. The rich heritage of the town can be easily seen in its gardens, architecture, customs, and more. It has derived its name from the valley of Taoro, common with Puerto de la Cruz and Realejos.
Anyone going to the Teide National Park will have to pass through this historical town. Panoramic courtyards of Orotava are famous. The majestic peak of Mt Teide and the fruit plantations behind the town present a beautiful scenery of the town. This place houses many old social and religious buildings having great importance.
A church called La Concepcion from the 18th century can be seen here. Moreover, the House of Balconies and of many other wealthy families which were built in 1632 is made of wooden carvings. In the 17th and 18th century, many rich families from Italy and Spain migrated to this place. Houses were built in traditional Canarian style. An annual fiesta called Corpus Christi also held in La Orotava old town, arranged by the locals. During this festival, squares and streets of the town remained filled with flowers and sand. Old town of Orotava has been announced as a site of National Artistic and Historic Nature.
Lovers of gardens must pay a visit to the botanical gardens, Hijuelo del Botanico, where tropical plants from various parts of the world are in abundance. Moreover, another famous garden is Jardines del Marquesado de la Quinta Roja, also referred to as Jardin Victoria also offers amazing views to the nature lovers.
