La Montana de Arucas is a former volcano situated in Arucas, the town, and municipality on the island Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It lies in the north of the island, 12 km west of the capital and is an amazing historic center with architecture preserved from the eighteenth century.
La Montana de Arucas is approximately 300 000 years old and has a height of more than 400 meters. Also, it serves as a natural viewpoint from where you can observe the beautiful urban panorama not only of Arucas but also of Gran Canaria, La Isleta in Las Palmas, the Mountain of Gáldar and La Cumbre, etc. From up here, the visitors can also look over the famous island plantations of banana groves, along with palm thickets. Furthermore, Marquesa Garden with a plethora of endemic and exotic plant species.
The first aboriginal settlements of La Montana de Arucas date back to the 4th century A.D. which are proved by the remnants of caves and houses the first people built here. The name was given to the mountain as well as the town those days was Arehucas, from the native language, meaning "the place of the peak".
Actually, the specific thing about the mountain is that it features a lookout point at the top, where the crater of the volcano used to be. In the 1950's, the caldera was filled, whereas a restaurant and an arbor was erected on the site.
