Khumbu Icefall features in most dangerous stages of South Col route to Mt. Everest base camp. Located at the head of Khumbu glacier in the south of Everest base camp and it forms the Icefall at such an enormous speed that large crevasse openings give hardly any warning. Large blocks of ice fall down gradually in size ranging from 0.9 m to 1.2 m.

Many climbers try to pass Khumbu Icefall during early morning as it is found in the frozen state. However, with the sunrise, the ice started melting and it becomes difficult to cross this. The experience climbers can cross the Icefall in few hours but the beginner might take 10-12 hours passing through it. Sometimes, when the large blocks of ice fall fell, dust erupts from that place and it is a very unnerving experience for the new trekkers. If a climber gets caught in an avalanche or some other movement, then he must be prepared to get trapped in the Icefall. As the shape of Icefall changes continuously, crossing the Khumbu Icefall is a dangerous activity. Extensive roping network cannot be relied upon as a life savior. Many crevasses stay hidden and therefore it becomes extremely difficult to avoid them.
